My first crack at weathering

So I made an attempt at weathering a hopper but honestly feel I over killed it. I should have left it as it stood in the second picture. I can fix it but want to do a few more things before I throw in the towel and do a total repaint. Either way it was a good learning experience. I also shortened the coupling distance between my Amfleet cars today as well. So simple not even worth posting.

I also started a second one and like the results a bit better. I’m seriously thinking of steadily converting to Kadee’s as my standard.

Dang didn’t even get it out of the shop and the taggers got ya. Who’s Ralph? Somebody in your neighborhood?

To hell with the jail, it’s straight to the hangin tree

LOL I better hide my rolling stock from Ralph. They look good. Also try spraying a very light coat of the krylon camo paint tan color along the bottom. Thats what I have been using on mine and really does the trick.

Uh oh! The villagers are angry again!

Ha, I see the posse I dispatched has strung up that scoundrel tagger. Although I understand Roosters can scurrey about quite a while without their head  Ralph

Shawn,
The pics aren’t that great but if you look at the bottom of the Ralph car there is some camo/tan

I don’t see any crack. Looks quite servicable to me!

I’m thinking this car should be interchanged too the Bluestone Southern this weekend and we shall see how it interchanges from there!

I agree the second pix looks good for a 1960-70s era. But the end result works for the 21st Century.

David !
I have found when weathering most any thing LESS IS MORE that
was passed on to me by a few fella modelers.

Phil.

Welcome Phil!
You wasted your first post on me!
I feel honored!

OK, Dave, now that I have this picture thing working, here are 2 closeups of the rust, and one shot of the whole boxcar. I put it on top of my truck, in work parking lot, and the Northeast Corridor tracks are in the background.

I’ve learned that modern cars fade and then rust, the older steel just rusted.

dang Lou what kind of a truck do you drive that has a scoop on it.

The bax car looks great you did a realy nice job on it.

Thats the XM radio antenna on the roof.
Thanks for the comments.
BTW right after the picture, a hard wind blew if off the roof into the bed. Luckily, only one grabiron broke off.

VERY NICE!!!

Lou, great weathering job…

Kinda looks like my son sneezed all over it…
