Large Scale Central

My first attempt at a 7.5" gauge project

It’s 1/8 scale and I’m just about finished with it. It’s the same as the 1/29 model I made a couple years ago. I started it in August 2010 and worked diligently till Thanksgiving…then took a break and built a few 1/29 cars and about a month ago I got back to finishing it up. I just got my vinyl transfers and applied them yesterday…that made a world of difference…it now looks finished! And I’m ready to unveil it here. What do you think? Enjoy!

Looks great Brian, nice work indeed. Good to see the DTI modeled - it doesn’t get much mention on any Forum.

Nice! When does the locomotive get built?..

My thought exactly ! I'm also fond of the DTI. I'd like to see the Grand Trunk RR modeled too ;) Ralph

Very nicely done. How much does that weigh?

cool!

Wonderful looking caboose… great job…

Thanks guys,

Ken: No plans for an engine anytime soon…

Bruce: I’m not sure…I’d guess between 100 and 150 pounds

Nice work, great results.

Ok, Brian.... That comment got my attention and curiousity up....

Might I ask as to what the inspiration was to build the caboose in 7.5 guage???

Andy,

I just like cabooses. I’d love to have a real one. Margaret and I ride them whenever we can.

And if I ever do get into ride-on scale trains on my property or others, I’ll have my caboose already!

We were introduced to this scale by a friend and have found it to be a lot of fun. One of the finest 7.5" gauge railroads is just over an hour from us…the White Creek RR. It has 5 miles of mainline on 120 acres. It is just beautiful.

Brian,

Great job! What are the actual dimensions?

Dan,

It’s about 4 feet in length over the couplers, The body is about 14" wide and it sits about 21" above the rails.

Brain, I totally understand… I wanted a caboose in my back yard, but, with the prices going sky high a few years ago, and considering transportation costs, I decided to build my own… I thought it would make a great asset to my garden railroad, and give a great plan to view the garden railroad from… However, my caboose is kinda like a mutt caboose… I’ll have an 8 ft long covered porch on the east end, then 20 foot of actual enclosed caboose, then a 12 foot covered porch on the west end… Will kinda look like a ““transfer”” caboose… I want to finish the enclosed part like an actual caboose… It will have a cupola in it… Dimensions are 10 foot wide, and 40 foot long… I finally got around to starting on the framework last week…

I found a company in Calif a few years ago, that had the basic metal framing stuff for caboose and roof framing all planned out out… I started out with them…

Where’s the wheels?..

He sold them to buy more covered hoppers.

Nice looking Caboose Brian!

No plans for a locomotive yet hah, well how about a pre-made little electric engine with a nice looking pre-built flat car, and an extra set of trucks. I happen to have them sitting in my shop ready to go. All the little electric needs is a couple of deep cell batteries and it’s ready for the track.

I aquirred these a few years ago from an estate sell and originally wanted to set something up for the grand kids, but after getting sick it’s hard enough just keeping up with the 1.5 acres and my garden railroad.

What Randy said.... :)

Andy,

I like the idea of building your own. I too had a similar thought since the cost and hassle of getting a real one is sizable. Whether it be free standing like yours or a room off the house that’s treated like a caboose. Other ideas were to make an interlocking tower or station. All would be great places to display railroadania or just hang out. Have a nice potbelly stove in it too!

Brian, I agree… An interlocking tower would be an idea… I moved my caboose gazeebo over to ““other scales””, as I think i’ve done too much here on it, and didn’t want to take away from your beautiful caboose… A friend of mine down in KY had a prefab building brought in, and added a bay facade to it, to make it look like a small depot… he has his railroad and stuff in it…
