My other hobbies besides Trains, are cars. I have three classic cars. One 1962 Corvette, witch I have owned for 46 years. I have a 1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 Tri Power Bench seat 4 speed. Ane we also have a 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix 389 Tri Power 4 speed.
Very Nice! Do you sometimes wish the Vette was a 63 split window?
No, why should I, I had several others over the years, including 63’s. And if you think I will sell my car and your thinking of big profit, my car belongs to my daughter. The Corvette is the car she came home from the hospital in when born. 63’s may be popular, but they where the worst to drive out of all midyears, 65 thru 67’s where the best drivers !
Nice cars.
My dad was working at the Providence plant of the US Rubber Co. in the early 50s and just after the Korean War he was involved in the production of early Corvettes bodys/parts which were all white in color due to problems with the fiberglass body parts which when painted with the same paint would dry into different shades of the same color. The fiberglass problems were somewhat resolved by the time the 55s were produced. My fave Vette is what Richard has.
Rex,
Why did you come up with that reply? Jumping to all kinds of conclusions without thinking, huh. Did I ask if your cars were for sale?
The 63 split window is the most coveted of all corvettes, regardless of how it rides.
I just asked if you would like a 63 split. Thats all.
Jeez…
My ‘32 Oldsmobile DCR, a ‘30 Chevy 4dr sedan, and my’31 chevy 4dr special sedan. All three I did frame off rotisserie restorations on. The ‘30 belongs to a customer. What started out as a hobby has now turned into a part of my business. In 12-14 years I have now done from full restoration to re-roofing and anything in between on over 25 cars!
This is my fun car.
A Factory Five Racing 1965 Cobra replica. Yes it is purple and it has a 302 under the hood I bought the kit in 1998 and had it on the road in 2000.
Honesty Todd, in my opinion I personally think it’s tastefully done. However I’ve been an import mechanic (not technician) for the past 36yrs so whatda’ I know.
I’m not lucky enough to own one of these classics, but I do have a Cobra story.
In 1968, I had just about got my license when my older brother brought home Hans Schmidt, III’s Cobra - El Cid…
One of the original five Dragonsnake Shelby Cobras, El Cid won the 1964 Daytona Winter Nationals. It was not built for the street and was purchased directly from Carroll Shelby.
My brother drove for Hans and was at Daytona when it won the Winter Nationals. He wasn’t driving in the championship runs.
That’s just the back story. My brother brought El Cid home, left it parked in the driveway with the keys in it and left. This was too much temptation for my best friend and I. What harm would it be to take it once around the block?
By the time I got into 3rd gear it was probably doing north of 100. A residential Stop sign flew past in a flash of red. I let off the gas and crept home, scared poopless! My brother never found out until I told him this story 30 years later.
No, the 1967 L88 is.
I’ve had this '64 since 1985 and did a restomod ~12 years ago.
If you watch Wheeler Dealers, my car is the one they show in the first 2 minutes. It is one of the most beautiful mid years in existence.
I restored this 1st day production '70 roadster to NCRS Top Flight. The car is now in Christchurch, NZ and I sent the owner all the paperwork/receipts. We were the second owners and I had the original paperwork and protecto-plate. (She traded a Camaro in on it at the time.)
We had five Vettes at once and still also have a '91 coupe with every option offered with the A/T. We are the original owners and the car now has ~65K miles. I wanted to wait until the '92 model year with the new LT1 engine (good thing we didn’t), but the wife just had to have this color. This was at the 50 years of Corvette held at Downtown Disney.
I don’t have cars, I have trucks. This was my beautiful 2002 GMC short bed with the 8 foot bed. It got totaled by a guy on his phone that ran a red light.
My wife said no new vehicle payments, so I bought a 2006 Chevy shortbed to replace it. Not completely happy with the online sale, I bought a second one.
No worries now, I have a spare. Way back I had a 1959 Ford with a Holmes hand crank wrecker. I found this Holmes 1955 hand crank wrecker (bed accessory) you can see in truck A. Needed a period correct truck for the wrecker, so I got this 1956 Chevy 3800. It is a work in progress.
So some people have a boat or a camper. I still camp in a tent with the scouts so I don’t need that yet. I do have my 1998 Chevy 3500HD hobby wrecker.
now, that is a truck!
Ha That is an awesome story Jon and you are lucky to have lived to tell the tale. Imagine if you had crashed it. You would be forever infamous in Cobra lore.
Just another example of teens with absolutely no sense! It was a busy residential neighborhood with lots of kids. Very lucky I didn’t hurt someone.
In an unrelated story, after big snow storms we enjoyed drifting around corners and bouncing off of snowbanks. It was great fun doing this in Mom’s car until I found a fire hydrant buried in a snowbank. Mom was not thrilled
Have my own Cobra story.
It was 1979 and I was working at an engineering company out of college and one of the guys had an original '64 Cobra, numbered in the low 100s (like 134 IIRC) he wanted to sell. We are talking the ORIGINAL COBRA with the 260 ci Ford engine and the recirculating ball steering and IIRC less than 200 were made like this.
I was in the market for a car not wanting to drive my '69, A108, 318 ci Dodge van (with a bad cylinder) from Van Nuys to Pasadena every day. The Cobra needed restoration. It was all aluminum (no paint), in poor shape, and the passenger door had a crack. He wanted $12,500 for it.
I had half the money saved up, and asked my father if he would loan me the other half. He asked what it would cost to restore, and at the time it was about another $12,500 bringing the cost up to about $25K. He asked what it would be worth after the restoration, and at the time, I told him $25-$35K. He said it wasn’t a good deal and would not loan me the money. I ended up buying a new turbo Capri RS.
The Cobra is now worth well over a million dollars if it is still around!
