I wish the D&RGW had one of these. It would be easier to paint and decal. I’ll just come up with a fictitious name and number. The roof lifts off for battery, sound and decoder.

nice looking boxcab, John… Wonderful job…

Nice work John!

John, is this going to haul your MOW train?

Great work, btw.

After researching, it turns out there was a boxcab on the D&RGW narrow gauge… It didn’t belong to them, but was leased to the D&RGW by Smiths Contracting. It was used to relocate 12 miles of track, after the Navaho Dam was built that inundated the town of Arboles, Co.
It was a single truck, 23 tonner painted in Grande Gold.
Mine is a 2 truck 50 tonner, but I’m gonna fudge a bit on this one.
Time to get ahold of Stan for decals…

Disclaimer: No, the D&RGW didn’t have a two truck boxcab. Nor a wooden BxCb. Nor one with this number. Got a battery, AW and an Alco switcher PX sound in it. It’s kinda fun watching it trundle around the layout.

Well done John. Not a rivet counter here, so I believe that there is a possibility that the D&RGW had this boxcab. But, the records were lost in a minor misshap at the shops when the cleaning crew knocked the file into a waste basket that was emptied that very day.

Great job John. That really came out nice.

John, it did truely come out great… Beautiful boxcab…

That looks super John. I’m a big fan of the side rods / Alco diesels sound; but I’m still running those trucks under the original bodies

Nicely done John, I like the yellow and black paint combo.

SWEET! More pics!!!

Great Job John! Looks Great! More pics indeed!

Here is some info for those of us suffering from the Boxcab interest…Aristo sent out an email today saying they have ART 29139 2 axle truck with SS wheels and motor available on their on-line store. ($39.99 plus shipping)

John - that is a beautiful job! Me and ig would be really proud to have such a loco on the VBR & OMLSL - but we need a list of the extra parts you incorporated - the end caps on the air tank, headlights s and so on, if you would be so kind. We have a load of those nifty handrails from Phil’s NG, as well as cut levers and brake gear, but need to know the source of the freight door bits.

Then all we have to do is to find a Bachmann 45-tonner for less than $450…

Did I ever mention that we occupy a small part of the yUK? ‘Living’ is not exactly what we do here.

Tac,
Ozark Minnies: Tank ends, roof vents, stirrup steps, misc N/B/W, door hdwre.
The stacks are brass tubing with Ozark polling pockets for mounting flanges.
The intake is styrene with a scrap of window screen.
Lift bars are Phils, but just the mounting bits. I had to extend the actual bar so I cut Phil’s out.
Windows are Grandt house windows, with the four panes cut out.
Bell was a broken brass bell I found in the junk box, so I made the holders out of tall Ozark queenposts.
Headlights are Bockmann Annies. I had one in the junk and stole one off one of my good Annies.
Headlight supports are USA brakemen platforms from the junk box.
Accucraft coupler gear boxes with KD knuckles.
Horns I found on an old Aristo RS3 I had laying around.
Decals by Stan Cedarleaf, left over from my MOW projects.
Grab bars are Phils, held on by small brass escutcheon pins.
Roof walk supports and scribed siding are Phils.
Man door knob is an Ozark Linknpin pin.
Airbrake valves and gladhands are Phils.
End steps are off of the donor engine.
Roof is a piece of 1/16 plywood from my wood scrap pile.
Basswood of various sizes for the rest.
Paint is the closest I could find to what I wanted. I think it is called “Pumpkin Orange” rattle can.

Except for the paint, everything came from my stash of parts. I traded for the Bockmann diesel.
So I have about $3.99 in it out of pocket, if you don’t count the original cost of the trade and parts.
I always keep a good supply of stuff on hand in my bin boxes.

Very nice build John, and fast too!

Tac, I got my 45tonner for £70, there were quite a few going for £99-140

Alec

John & Alec - many thanks for the ‘Handy helpful hints’ - that will come in useful, to say the least.

Aleck, I’ll go looking for a boxcab at the big show in Llanfair this weekend - if you are there sunday, look out for an old fart wearing either a a darkish blue ‘Crazy Norwegain’ baseball hat or an AccuCfat hat, and a bright red ‘CANADA’ sweater. If you see him, it’s most likely to be me. I’ll have a rare fuzzy-topped yellow-beaked vulture in my backpack, too.

Can’t be too many of THEM hanging around the average train show in mid-Wales, for sure.

Best to all there
