Large Scale Central

My attempt at new technology

After being inspired by this thread

http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/20952/maker-bot-at-the-local-library/view/page/1

I have begun the process of looking at using the local libraries equiptment to make some models.

My local library has available

Tools available to use in the Lab

3D Printing & Scanning:

  • 1 Makerbot Thing-o-Matic 3D printer
  • 1 Makerbot Replicator 2X 3D printer
  • 4 Makerbot Replicator2 3D printers
  • Makerbot Digitizer (3D scanner)

Laser Cutting, Vinyl Cutting & Paper Cutting:

  • New Hobby Laser 5th Generation laser cutter
  • Graphtec RoboPro Craft vinyl cutter
  • Cricut machine and cartridges

Electronics:

  • Soldering irons, wire cutters, strippers, vises, solder suckers, multimeters, etc.
  • Arduino boards

the library provides training for free, you do have to pay for materials

  • 3D Printer Plastic: 5 cents per gram (they weigh the piece after you print it)
  • Adhesive vinyl: $0.75 for an 8.5"x11" piece; $1.50 for a 12"x24" piece
  • Cardstock: $0.25 for a 6"x12" or 8.5"x11"sheet, or $0.50 for a 12"x12" sheet.
I was told we can bring in our own materials for the laser cutter, which will cut/engrave up to 1/4" thick plywood

Today after lunch I will be using the libraries 3d scanner to see what kind of detail I can get from various parts that I’m having problems scratch building. The Librarian has informed me that the scans will more then likely need a lot of touch up details

So later today I will be posting pictures of the lab and more importantly the equiptment.

Next Wednesday I have an appointment with my 13yr old son to learn how to use the 3d printers (he’s interested in making lego compatable pieces) the training takes about 45 minutes. From there you can begin using the equiptment right away

Makerbot has a website called thingiverse that shares projects that you can download and then print

http://www.thingiverse.com/

You can go through existing drawings, add them to “Your Colection” and it saves each project to you profile page to use at a later date

One of the first projects I think I will print is this one

each piece is a seperate download

i’ll be using this bogie for a mine area that I plan on building this spring

Some other projects i’m following on thingiverse

thinking with something like this

this just might be possible

Keep us posted.

Looking good Mark can’t wait to see how everything turns out.

Sounds interesting. I browsed the thing website. Seems like it takes a while to find what you’re looking for. Have any search tips?

The Fayettville Library was one of the first to add 3d printing, and this is the unit (still working)

They have upgraded to this unit

they also have a 2x but I forgot to take a picture of that one

forgot the name of this unit, does slightly larger pieces

and the 3d scanner

and the rendering onscreen

Looking forward to printing something on Wednesday

Playing around with Sketchup13 today they have a good dowloadable library of train related stuff

pulling aprt the bombardier drawing to see what can be made into parts for the Makerbots

3d rendering of the above vehicle, with a couple variations, the clearance rack is a bit taller to represent mmy clearances

Wasn’t able to get to the library yesterday (it closed)

Here’s why

https://fbcdn-vthumb-a.akamaihd.net/hvthumb-ak-ash4/t15/s350x350/1898469_10151937198502651_10151937198262651_48246_429_b.jpg

Pf course that link doesn’t work right, it’s a time lapse video not a still picture

Got certified on the 3d Printer and the Laser cutter, took my son today to get certified as well

Here are our first projects printed

this wheel is from this file on thingiverse

took 9 minutes to print, weight was 3g @.05/ gram = $.15

The printer setting was on “Normal” - the printer has 3 settings and “Normal” is the middle setting

Geez, our library is lucky to have a xerox machine

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing.

Todays printing

lamp post - 9 grams per side, 2 sides required 18g x 5c/g $ . 90

Was thinking about 3d printing switches, so I tried this file to see how it looked

This happens sometimes, one side didn’t stick to the plate and began to curl and deformed

About $3 in materials, 3 hours print time (done in 1.5hrs with 2 printers- the reason for 2 colors)

Mine cart (About $3.25) 2hrs print time

printing some truck frames today to see how they did

the printer would run out of clear filimant shortly after this pic, lesson learned

this is 16 grams @.05/g = .80c

Also printed another side frame project, had to rescale it from 1/32

these are 8g each so .80c a pair, need to tweak the cross beam support, its guage right but the thickness is based on the 1/32 size, which will not fit these now they are blown up a bit to look more 1/29th ish

for the truck frame, the weight was 16g @ .05/g = .80c

spent the last 2 hours drawing up some more modern style freight trucks
