My arc-welding effect

My arc-welding scene with LED lights for effect.

Jay

Nice looking work… But those gentlemen are using a oxy/acetylene torch right?

Michael

Yes. Am I doing something wrong?

Jay,

Arc welding is a type of welding that uses a welding power supply to create an electric arc between an electrode and the base material to melt the metals at the welding point.

Oxy-fuel welding (commonly called oxyacetylene welding, oxy welding, or gas welding in the U.S.) and oxy-fuel cutting are processes that use fuel gases and oxygen to weld and cut metals, respectively.

The torch rig you depict is capable of cutting perhaps 1/2" steel and gas welding lighter gauge steel, maybe as thick as 1/8".

Michael

Nice effect, wrong type of equipment. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

Learn something new everyday. Hopefully the average viewer won’t be as knowledgeable in arc vs. oxy-fuel welding.

Here you go.

Jay, If you were to put an orange-ish cover over your LED and then change the sound to more of roar (torch flame) you would be good for what you have pictured. Otherwise an arc welder is a pretty easy modeling job. Just a box with some cables. And who knew, (besides Todd) that they actually have a scale model of one ready to go ?!

Jay, yes, as has been explained. But like you said, many folks don’t know the difference. But many do. Its like the time I commented that someone had a nice set of EMD locomotives, and then I asked “but why do they sound like Alcos?”. The gentleman asked “Is there a difference?”

So you have to know your audience. If they don’t know, then gopher it. If they do know, then…
