Murphy's Law squared

… It hadn’t happened in 15 years, but Monday was the day. SWMBO crashed the HDD with the OS, which means apart from spending money, reinstalling all the $%*&@# programs. I’m still at it, one by one as I need them! Do you know where all your PSNs (Product Serial Numbers) are?

Even a smart set-up helps only to a point in cases like that. The upside: didn’t need to spend $800 - 1500 in order to retrieve all the data from the drive! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee! Just work down the list on the programs HDD - oh yes, that is a completely separate one now, just like the OS has its own. Used to be three partitions on the same drive.  Which was pretty safe for many, many, many years … until one day.

I use the 3 partition method. But I know where everything is that’s needed to restore my drive should I experience a complete failure. I keep a folder on another computer as well as an external HD that has everything neatly tucked inside awaiting a disaster should it come. It takes me about 8 hours to restore everything should the drive need to be replaced.

Warren,

Yes, the 300GB external has now replaced the 30GB tape drive. Was just a matter of time.

In the “good old days” I had a “restore OS” dir on the one 'puter. Was good for that one; *&^#$% IBM processor on that was lots of grieve. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
