MTH Big Boy first run video

I got the Big Boy repaired and tried it out.

Love the front view of these, with the boiler off center.

Mikie sure knows how to make them smoke, doesn’t he?

When I was at the TCA show in York, one of the guys at MTH said they are doing another run of the big boys. I really wish they had went 1/29 instead of 1/32nd, and oddly enough so did the guy from MTH. They are truly a beautiful engine, Jerry thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys. I like the 1/32 scale, seems to fit in my landscape better and not be so dominating as my 1/29 stuff. Plus trains with lots of cars don’t take up so much space, but still look big. Like you are just a little further away.

One correction Jerry, on the video. DCS is NOT a form of DCC, in fact it is fundamentally different in that it is a carrier wave with the signal “on top”.

Think of an AC waveform (like from your outlet) and then superimpose a smaller wave on top of it…

The AC on the rails (or DC) can be like 20 volts, and the DCS signal “riding” on the track power might be just a volt or so.

In DCC, it’s like PWM (squarewave) but the frequency varies and the variation is the “data”.

Really analogous to AM and FM radio, almost exactly the same concept.

Its all just PFM to me.

That’s one big engine and sounds good too!

PFM…that’s the stuff they use to make fiber optics work, too, …ya know, glass strands that carry noises and pitchers…

I enjoyed the video a lot. Thanks for posting. Maybe it was just me, but the chuff seemed to be saying “Lookie, Lookie, …, Lookie, Lookie, …” But hey, that nice engine should have folks admiring it.

Made this simple loco carrier for the BB engine. That is 36" long, with tender it would be 53" and hard to carry/move. Just 1/4" ply with a luan 1/8" strip down the middle that the wheels stradle. Two strips on the bottom the right height for it to stradle the rails and the sanded down curve to touch the rails. Small bungi cords and small screw eyes.

Works for me okay.

Man, that’s a magnificent thing.

That’s great, Jerry… Good job of fixin’…

I like the carrier too…

Glade you got it fixed and running. What where the main issues? Nice video. Later RJD

Apart from a broken frame? Isn’t that classed as a main issue? It sure would be to me!

Frames for both the front and rear drives were broken where the motor joins the frames. Just thin pot metal.

II glued them up, then after several tries came up with bolting a brass strip on using the holes that held the brake parts, only thick part of the metal. Had to use thicker brass on the rear drive, quite a lot of mass back there.
