We bought a house in Newton, KS. Ours here in Nebraska is sold. Getting near my son in Wichita. Man a lot of paperwork! Contacted Jim Carter, he’s in the club there and I plan to join.
Will build a raised layout, if I have any money left. Might have to save for awhile. Hate to leave here, but being close to grandkids will be nice. Love my layout here but all the weeding was getting rough on a 74 year old guy. Lots of outdoor carpet/mulch/gravel is the plan.
So, once it warms up a bit(17 right now) and some snow melts I’ll take up the railroad and move it with me, including my 14’ bridge. Wish Scotty could beam it up and move it for me!
I’ll keep my web page for awhile anyway.
Jerry, why not keep your web page, and then add the new layout? Lots of history on that layout.
Give J.C. “Pi Man” a hey for us, I think his layout is no more… the tree won!
Greg
Jerry, Good to hear. Always nice to be near the grandkids, and a son with strong arms and back. Mine is 250 miles away, but is still helpful when I ask. You’ll love the idea of a raised layout. Great for us older guys. They hold up well in weather and are easy to play on. Just don’t count on digging all the post holes for the up rights. I used concrete deck piers to set the up rights in without digging and it’s worked well. I later set a couple of lateral braces on one of the long runs and and a curve, but other wise no problems. I think I sent you some photos, but if not let me know and I’ll send some over. Need to check on Newton, KS, may be easy to get to visit as I travel through Kansas to visit family in St. Louis. Stay well and healthy and don’t pick up too many moving boxes! Stay in touch.
Best of everything, Jerry… Yup, moving at our age ain’t for wimps…
It will be fun to watch your new build, Jerry.
isn’t Kansas just the center of hurricane alley?
if yes, maybe a layout in the cellar would be safer?
Well, it’s probably safer to be outside in Kansas than Paraguay, the following is from the Canadian Government Travel site, which states the risks due to crime are at a high level:

Ah, that would be tornado ally, and yes, Toto, I don’t think we are in Kansas anymore.
Oh man Jerry, I don’t envy you one bit having just gone through the exact same thing for the same reasons.
Started about 3 1/2 years ago tearing down/out the old RR, sorting and packing up the RR, the shop, the barn, the garden sheds, a lot of stuff from the house, boy a guy sure can horde, err, I mean save, a lot of neat stuff if you spend 20-30 years in the same house. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
The fun will be in the getting to start over with an almost clean slate and build a whole new RR(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif) I say an almost clean slate because you will, like me i"m pretty sure, save every building, bridge, trestle, retaining wall, tunnel portal and etc., then spend many hours trying to fit them into the new railroad space.
Raised table top railroad, the only way to go for us older Gentlemen, the one down side is the lack of real estate when you start adding structures. I have enjoyed your current RR through the forums and look forward to to your new effort.
Good luck on your move.
Rick
Good luck on the move Jerry

that pretty well sums it up. they only forgot, that not even the police dares to enter native indian’s settlements after dark.
but we got no hurricanes!
Its just evolution. Enjoy the ride. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
Welcome down South Jerry!
I still have bad dreams aboout my last move…and it actually went smoothly! Best of luck to you!
Hey Jerry,
Let me know when you get down this way. I’m in McPherson, about 25 minutes north of Newton right off 135. You can come up and run trains on my little layout
The Wichita Garden Railroad club is great. They’re too far away for me to participate regularly, but they have a really nice garden RR tour each year. I always take the kids down and we always enjoy it. Also there’s a garden railroad at Botanica, the Wichita botanical gardens. That would be another place you could run trains while you’re rebuilding.
Dan
I got within two weeks of moving, ten years ago. Railroad dismantled and packed for moving.
Then, the reason for moving disappeared.
On the upside, I got to correct the mistakes I had made…and make some new ones.
Thank you everyone. Such a nice response. I know this will have it’s ups and downs but I feel it will be worth it. I’ll be near my son and his family and a lot of G scalers. That will be nice, been pretty isolated out here with just one buddy here with a layout. All the rest are hundreds of miles away in eastern Nebraska. We have tornadoes here Korm, but wanted to get closer to the action! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)Not really, but will be good. Now back to packing.
Joe, thanks for the photo fix, maybe I’ll learn how to do that someday.
Any time Jerry! (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
Well Jerry it will nice for you to be a lot closer to the kids. I spent 20years in Wichita and moved just about the time I got into G scale but I had a basement full of HO trains that I had to pack up and tear down the 80ft of bench work. Not fun. Glade you got in touch with JC last time I saw him is when he had his layout open for the National convention which was in KC. Yep think the trees won out and RR no longer there. I know I will not be packing up anytime soon to get close to my kids, Michigan is not my cup of tea. I’d like to see your plan for the table top as that is where I’m headed to this spring. BTW the new place looks great and good flat lot which KS is noted for flat land. One thing you also will be close to the BN RR not same as UP but trains. Newton use to be a big hub and crew change point at one time. Enjoy Later RJD
