Motorized brush car

The line needed some MOW equipment since the leaf and acorn fall are significant this year. I was interested in the rail kleen but couldn’t find one for sale.

So I was poking around and saw this motorized brush roller attachment for a Dyson vacuum. It is 6" wide.

It cost $16. I used a flat car and a spare DeWalt battery charger to make a sweet sweeper. I think I’ll try to put a mini blower on it, since the vacuum head makes a good track wide shroud.

Here is an after shot.

Coool!!!
Giant Foot Action!! GFA!

That’s pretty nifty. I’ve been meaning to build a broom car myself; this $16 whatzit is like 90% of the work!

Oh Bruce!

You’re on a roll!

Yes, when I saw the attachment and its low price, I figured it was worth a shot. I ordered a mini blower to try to fit next. Then I will try to tart it up into a proper MOW piece.

My only concern is if the broom and all are in proper bearings. Sweeping a big layout will quickly wear things out if the rotating ends are only in plastic. Need to order one myself.

Looks like if it was on the front of the car it could be more efficient … Nice idea though .I wander how long it would last . power input control might help from burning up too fast .

I considered putting it up front, but didn’t want to build a cantilever to hold it and then have to put a bunch of weight in the back. In the middle, it keeps the weight over both trucks, and doesn’t seem to fling too much gunk at the front truck.

I am going to put a potentiometer in there to dial in the sweep speed. I imagine it was designed to run at a pretty speedy rpm being for a vacuum.

For Bob, the brush does have roller bearings and seems a very smooth runner. I removed the “skirt” so then had to cut out the annular mount from the skirt, since that holds the roller bearing. I then CA’d the mounting ring back into the hood. This will probably make more sense when holding the attachment, lol.

Interesting idea and solves most of the problems of scratch building the motor and brush. I’ve been meaning to make a broom sweeper car but make it look like a ballast tamper.

Might be a good use on the front of my Trackmobile.

The broom would be a great addition to the front of your Trackmobile Bob. That is a cool looking rig. You could also add a jet\fan to it to blow leaves.

I do think your broom would work better being on the front Jim.

I built this railbroom for my RR.

Huh, and it’s apparently prototypical…

What a beast! Perfect for your cab.

Is that file available?

The blower didn’t work out, but still pretty happy with the sweeping action on its own.

Jim, this could have been your MIK entry!

I should have waited, but just couldn’t do it because I was antsy for a project.

Now I have to think of something fresh, and a little more whimsical.

Maybe a Mad Max style “War Rig” loco?
