Large Scale Central

More railroad finds

On Wednesday we went out to Quabbin Reservoir for a walk on some of the old Athol and Enfield Railroad roadbed. The RR was pulled up around 1935 as the Reservoir filled, but this part of the roadbed goes along the shore for about three miles. Found a couple of neat things. One is an old spike. It was just sitting in the middle of the trail. Its pretty small, maybe 6" overall.

Another is a neat piece of clinker. It has a fairly large bubble on it. There was tons of clinker around, but this one really caught my eye.

This is the route.

At the end is the site of the North Dana Depot. Its right at the shore now, but looking at historical pictures, it was a significant area, with two tracks, what looks like a freight house and a station, and possibly a hotel or boarding house. Nothing remains except some broken bricks and some rough cut stones, and one short bit of a creosoted pole sticking up out of the ground.

It’s always nice to find old items from the past, it lets your mind daydream of the day when the item was in use and wish you could go back just to see what life was really like in those days.

I am sure the add min building visitor center has some info …

Great finds, Bob. And nice connections to some great photos.

Another chance find today on a rail trail in NH. Saw it out of the corner of my eye half buried.

Ceramic insulator circa 1955.

Cool. I have a few brown ones. The black and white is nice.

I can’t take all my rust garden artifacts. They are too big and heavy. Can’t seem to give them away. They will probably end up with a scrapper :disappointed:

I have a couple blue glass ones I’ve had since I was a kid. Couple years ago I found a brown ceramic one. And now this beauty. Very fun.

Back at home and on the shelf.

That two tone ceramic is cool. I have a brown one that size. Movers were not thrilled with my brick collection. It was onlybone milk crate full. I showed them the hundreds I’m leaving behind!
