Large Scale Central

Moguls in New England

Hi all!

Yesterday I was able to purchase a Piko Mogul locomotive for a really good price. So, now, I am wondering what I should re-letter it as. Most likely it will end up being a B&M. Here’s the model…

Were wood-burning moguls a thing in New England? I can’t find any information that says they were, but I feel like they must have been. I’d love to find a real-world example of something at least close to this. Smaller, older railroads would be even better! (i.e. The Central Mass RR)

Thanks in advance for any help!

I couldn’t find that BM Google Sites page last night! Thank you so much, Rooster.

John, try this archive doc list for the B&M:

There’s a link to “Eastern Railroad Steam Locomotive Roster,” which has a few moguls, mainly connected to the Rhode Island RR (bought from, or sold to, it’s confusing).

Also, this list shows 3 moguls on the B&M (might be the same ones as the handwritten list, I didn’t compare them).

I did just find that hand-written list about an hour ago. I think that the list is organized by original engine name, original road number, new number, new number (new under BM). So, it looks like I could make my engine #197 “Tewksbury” (I’ve always liked that name). This will have to be an approximation of the real-life engine, as I don’t really want to be modifying it. too much. Probably just a paint job and lettering.

That other link is different. It gives engine number ranges instead of individual units. It suggests that BM had a ton of these engines.

I was hoping to find that the Central Mass had some Moguls, but it doesn’t look like they did.

Right, ranges of locos, nice. And a couple photos of them.

You have this book? Amazon also has it, but for almost 2x the price, used.

I do! I’ve looked through it twice now for engine examples.
It looks to me like not a lot, if any, if BM’s moguls were wood-burners. So, I may have to fudge this a bit.

Cool.

It looks like several of Piko’s moguls have coal loads. Maybe if you contact them for a spare coal load part that will fit your model, they might play ball.

What I am leaning towards currently is finding the earliest example for a BM mogul and lettering the engine for that. It may not have actually been a wood-burner, but oh well. I like that this is an earlier version of the engine, so I’d like to leave it as a wood load, I think. The engine ‘Tewksbury’ was one of their first moguls, so I’m thinking I’ll model that engine. It’ll require a paint job, but that’ll probably wait until next year. It runs, I’ve got other engines to worry about right now, asthetics can be put at the end o the list

B&M used moguls extensively in commuter service.
