Modified USA Trains/Lionel Ore Cars

Well I’ve never tried to post pictures describing one of my projects before (I was prompted by the Aristo ore car discussion), so here goes nothing:

John,

Nice overhaul! I haven’t really liked the look of many of the ore cars so far, but your lowered model is great.

I notice your proto photo shows the car with drawbars and dual airlines connected up high. Do they actually have gladhands to make seperating them somewhat easier? It must be a nightmere for the tech crew to keep these trains running perfectly when they’re not easily disconnected for individual maintainence.

Thanks…the Duluth seems to be the only line that had those high hoses as far as I know, but I am no expert that’s for sure; I have no idea why they did that. I’m thinking of finding a way of modelling it just because it’s a little different, but for now I’ll stick with the kadee “air hose” look.

On this, I wasn’t thinking drawbar, I was thinking and modelling more of their coupler arrangement like the picture below (which has only one air hose, but up high too):

Looks like the air line up high is to keep them clear of the trucks

dave is correct.

Glad we had this little discussion…I guess I won’t be modelling high air hoses.

It looks like a case of form following function. I now notice the discharge gates on the Duluth car are much, much wider than my model ore car, which, in turn, seems to have required moving the trucks forward and out of the way so that the forward wheels are way outside the body, which, in turn (!) means there’s no room there in the usual place for hoses.

It would look kinda goofy if I were to have high air hoses just for the heck of it.

John,

Those look great.
