Large Scale Central

Modern Flat Car Build

Well i’m moving right along on this car. I still have a lot of deck board to cut , fit and stain . After I epoxy around 8 of them I go back and drill 4 holes to each board to simulate mounting bolts . I have already installed 135 boards and drilled 540 holes so far. Still have the center timbers to do and have to come up with 16 cargo fixing points that go on the deck . I think I will use brass wire for that . The decals are in the works from Stan Cedarleaf and should be getting the first PDF file to review soon. Here is a photo of the car as it is today.http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/IMGA0398.JPG

Mike, that’s fantastic… Super job…

PDF is on it’s way…

I hope you’re going to weather it appropriately to! :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks great. The deck boards look really good.

Oh yeah ,I have to !

Since I am not going by any "formal"plans for this car other than pictures I sometimes come across something I should have addressed earlier in the build. As I’ve been doing the deck my eyes have been constantly drawn to the 6 screw heads on the deck . I was planning on cutting the deckboards to fit around the screw heads and then gluing another piece of wood on top of that but that would leave a noticeable high spot that I really didn.t want to see. Then it hit me ,"why don’t I take the screws out and drill out the 0.80 plastic deck to countersink them, Duh . So that’s what I did . Now that potential problem is solved . Here are a couple of photo’s . One shows the new improved , countersunk screw heads and the other is a shot of the cargo hold downs. I pre-rust the area where the brass wire loop will go so I don’t have to worry about getting the rust stain on my wood deck boards. http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/IMGA0399.JPG

looking good

WOW!! Beautiful.
Nice work.

Well I finally got all the wood deck parts cut and glued to the car. I’m really glad I chose the 1/32 thick plywood for the job. It was fun and easy to work with and I think its my favorite part of this car. I kinda hate to cover it with a load. However I invested in a couple of cast Cat generators already . That being said the loads will be removable . I will have to find some suitable cargo restraints . The pictures i’m posting now are pre weathered. I might leave it this way for a little while and see how I like it shinny and new. I did weather the trucks and couplers. Anyway I had a lot of enjoyment building it and I like that it was born from a flat sheet of plastic. I still have a lot of 0.80 and 0.60 sheet left and the whole winter to build more cars. I’ll post more pictures when I get the load sorted out.

Mike, beautiful looking car… excellent…

Nice work!

Thanks guys , its fun sharing . Heres a link to the picture of the real car I was using as reference. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=542269 Next project i’ll post the link at the beginning of the build now that I now know how to do that.

Fantastic finish Mike. The detail looks great and the effort put into the build really shines through.

Awesome build Mike. If I didn’t know better either of those last three pics could go as the real thing.

Well after looking at the prototype and the model ya’ can’t tell the difference!

Sweet Mike, As usual your work is outstanding. the RR is looking great as well.

keep the projects coming, it’s great to see all the standard gauge stuff.

I lost your # can you email it to me.

Thanks

Nick

Those look like MTH generators? or who made them?
I would like to get one for inside my scratch built engine.

Joe , they are made by Norscot . http://www.dhsdiecast.com/shop/product_detail.cfm?product_id=2923
