Oh yeah the subject of this thread…

At MLS it’s Live Steamers that suffer the rest of us and here it’s Operators that suffer us… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)Neither core cares about the ‘My way is Best’ dramas, they mostly sit back run their trains. I was a Lysol run away, every newsletter became a promo to buy … in my eyes. I left before the fun. Were a couple of guys I wonder about…

Happy Rails,

John

What’s Lysol ?

I’m honored to get the Rooster… l(y)sol was a semi negative nickname for a similar sounding large scale group. I didn’t coin it and probably should have omitted that reference. I left because it was too, uh, too controlled, kinda but … I dunno but didn’t want to pay to stay. There were yearly dues.

John

Lsol started out very popular, and then turned weird… the forum software itself was lame, and a lot of the screen was taken up in advertising.

Then LSOL took “posession” of your pictures, for a while they actually added a bright yellow watermark to them, yes a transparent “LSOL” was added to your picture and you cannot remove it.

It got worse and worse, I was denied renewal because (from the owners) “you don’t like LSOL very much”… you had to pay to even read it. This attitude clearly sank the ship.

Greg

It might also help clarify that LSOL was a two time site. It emerged with the internet, got popular, and for what ever reason, closed abruptly. At a later point in time it re-emerged again, same owners. I became a member for a couple years until I found I could get the same or better information elsewhere (here and MLS) for free. Why pay for information you can get for free. The last year I was a member, LSOL teamed up with St Aubins and allegedly members got preferential pricing. Not from my perspective. I dropped membership and it was only a year of two before both LSOL and St Aubins were gone. I read somewhere that for about 50 bucks you can purchase all the articles from LSOL on a DVD.

My Tuppence on LSOL

I read every article / post on LSOL before it closed. There was some good stuff, but it’s direction was towards money making and advertising, so MLS and LSC were better places to migrate to, I agree.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssss… I through i was only one that had this problem. Got into a lot of arguments with the old lady… " Whats mine and what theres." Oops sorry… lol.

Well, I was happy at LSOL, maybe because I didn’t run across the bad side of JoAnne. I figured that paying for the site is what kept the flame wars (ala MLS) at bay. I was sad to see it go, and I didn’t think I would fit in at another place. Then I landed here at LSC, and discovered that many of my assumptions were wrong. Many of the modelers here have better skills then I saw on LSOL. I have only seen only one or 2 flame wars, and they weren’t directed at me, and Bob quickly booted the worst offenders.

As for fitting in, I am not sure I actually “fit” anywhere. Its the square peg and round hole thing.

Email from my LSOL archives, read up from the bottom, as the “email trail” is there…

renewed and then my login stopped working…

Dear Greg:

Yes it has. You will also find a credit of $19.99 on your credit card that ends in 1698 for the membership you paid for last year. This is a full refund even though you only have a few months to go. It should appear on your card in a couple of days.

Why? It appears to me that you just do not like us. So I figured it was better to give you your money back and let you go enjoy running your trains and not have to fester on what we do or say.

All the best,
Jo Anne

I belong to both sites. I joined mls around the time Dave Fletcher started the Master classes. I really enjoy the building logs on both sites. There are a lot of great modelers on both sites. Never belonged to lsol just seemed to money oriented for me.

Chuck

I belong to both and prefer this site. It has more “personalities” that I enjoy and the comradery that you just don’t find on the other site.

I was also at LSOL and never had a problem with them. When they first went down, I didn’t ask for a refund and as a result became a free lifetime member until their demise.

It was a nice place to hold all my pictures, and I never had a problem with “watermarks” on mine. The only time they would place a watermark on a pic is either when they snapped it (Jon was here), or they used it for something.

But my originals were all still there, unaltered, for my use.

They watermarked a lot of pictures on the “free” storage they offered Aristo Forum members. It stopped after a lot of complaints, but often the damage was done, some people did not have backups of their pictures.

Greg

The only time they (LSOL) watermarked my pictures is when they were used in an article. I guess I came on-board too late to have experienced a lot of the “nonsense” that went on.

But since this thread is MSL vs. LSC, I do have to say I was never a member of MLS, not after I read some of the fighting and name calling in a few of their (MLS) threads.

I’m on both for the occassional glance when I have a few spare minutes. For me as a 7/8ths modeler there is very little from either that is applicable to my scale or methods. I’m not interested in archaic track power, commercial track with plastic ties or miles of track crammed in my backyard. Thus both are very limited in yielding anything useful.
