Mint Lionel - The Liberty Special

A friend of mine brought over a “new in box, never been open” Linonel set called the Liberty Special. This is a complete set with loco, 3 box cars, caboose, track and power supply. When you remove the lid from the box the set is completely sealed in the original plastic covering and has never been taken out of the box or ran. The box says:

The Liberty Special 1976
A limited Edition Bicentennial Complete 027 Gauge Electric Train Set.

Any thoughts on how much this might be worth, if anything at all?

Cheers

Cool find. Not a clue.

A used one sold for $100.00 here:

New, in box: who knows…

If this is the set (Lionel Number 1577), Greenberg indicates it’s about $180 for Excellent and up to $225 for a new set. (NOTE this is out of a price guide that is a couple of years old).

It is 1577. Thanks!

Anything for sale, or of collector value is only worth what someone else is willing to pay, or that the buyer of interest thinks it’s worth. I get a kick out of the auctions that are on public tv, and they “appraise” an item that the buyer paid $5 for 10 yrs. ago, and come up with an appraised value of $50,000 or some such figure. It only is worth what someone else will pay for it. I’d be saying to the appraiser “ok show me the money, I’ll sell it right now!” hah LOL Regal
