Mini Boxwoods, etc

Guys, Went to my local Home Depot for some more trestle stain. Wound up looking in the garden area. Found some racks of Mini Boxwoods, and other “garden RR trees” for $2.50 each. Spent about 60 bucks. Now I gotta go dig…sigh… jb

Now’s probably the best time to look for those “end of season” specials…good deal!

SWMBO spent about $100.00 last weekend! Oh, my achin’ back!

Thanks for the reminder!

I still have Boxwoods bought late Spring that are still in the pots. I guess I need to get them into the ground soon.

I’m transplanting mine to bigger pots and sinking the pot right in the fill.
The prez of a local gardening society said it would be fine to do it this way.
Besides, there ain’t much soil in my rock fill.
And if the location of the plant doesn’t work out, just pop it out and move it.

John,
I have tried the pot placement method. In some instances, it worked beautifully. Other locations dried up and died. Be sure you have regular watering to the plants in pots. The plants can’t spread out their roots to search for more water when in a pot.

I have my railroad elevated on a wooden platform similar to what Roger Smith did. I install a one or two gallon pot in the framework and then slip a second pot with the plant into it. That way I can remove the plant with it’s pot and still have the first pot in place on the platform. I installed a drip irrigation system to each potted plant and they have done well this summer in the drought we experienced. I agree that keeping plants in pots in the ground makes it a lot easier to work with them as long as you water and feed them.

I stumbled across the same thing yesterday. Alas, the HD I was at didn’t have quite the variety, though I picked up a dozen or so english and korean boxwoods. I’ll have to check the one closer to my house to see if they’ve got some of the verigated varieties on sale. Can’t go wrong at that price, and they’ve still got the 1 year guarantee to boot!

Later,

K

Neither a sale nor any of the desired miniatures at our HD. OTOH went to an art exhibit today, all kinds of arts including bonsai plants. They sure had some very interesting trees. I asked one guy how old specific specimens were … anywhere between 6 and 30 years. Oh dear! I guess I better get cracking!
