Large Scale Central

Mine Car - 3d printed

Printed this today from a Thingiverse file - not sure if I will use these wheels or use some aristo plastic ones instead, Total cost for the plastic was about $3.25, took about 3 hours of print time. I was using at one time 5 printers at once for a couple projects - the frame in the background will be used for an upcoming project later on, detail shots of that are in my other thread - Technical Modeling - My attempt at teck o knol o gee

Mark,

From the pictures it looks like the main body came out great, I would have to agree on the wheels, use some commercial ones.

Al P.

the tub was printed upside down, when it got to the end it did something funky by trying to fill in the center/bottom, which caused a little mix up, however, with some rock in it you wont see the bottom anyways

This car was comprised of 4 parts, main frame, tub, wheel and wheel hub

Pretty nifty…

Aaaww…now that’s cute Mark does it have a pull string?

Not too happy with the printed wheel so i was looking at the junk drawer

left is aristo plastic, middle is the 3d print , right side is scientific toys (i have enough of these wheels to do the 5 -6 cars i’d like to do)

the wheels on the aristo barely fit in, the rims on the scientific wheel is about 1mm to thick and wont fit under the frame. I don’t like the idea of cutting the wheels, so today i’ll print the hub again and scale it a little large then the uploaded file on thingiverse

3 of 5 printed

need to redesing the hub to make it a little longer to have the wheels clear the frame still, will do that later today and put the wheels on

one of the printers decided to go all fritzy and did this crappy job

the frame should be alot smother like the red ones in the background

I cut off the upright supports, will add a wood deck for a work car with the frame so all is not waisted

the good news about cutting this pla plastic is that its a a sugar based plastic and actually smells like it when cut. biodegradable material (granted still takes 500 yrs in a landfilll for that to happen)

A most interesting project Mark. Keep going, you will need at least ten …lol

Only doing 5 and the flat car for this project right now, looking at early diesel mine engines to build that from scratch using 3d printers

Right now i’m designing some more modern freight trucks for the countless aristo plastic wheels I have collected over the years from the DC/DCC guys that don’t use them

they might nee a little weight

“…one of the printers decided to go all fritzy and did this crappy job …”

Hmmm personally I think it looks better built-in weathering per say and will look even better with some weathering (ex. modelflex rust) blown onto it ! IF the “fritzy” did not compromise the structural integrity of the frame !

Nice to see experimentation/creation being done with this latest tech’ !!

decided on the engine

That engine is cool.

3d printers are amazing.

Keep us posted to the final product.

It’s ugly!

I like it!

Mark neat stuff, if you can find them, add a few self-adhesive lead tire weights from an auto supply shop, or use all metal wheels, that helps with the stability. That is a neat engine.

Why not use some small Bachmann metal wheels? They would be far more stable with some weight down the bottom.

printed the hubs today

and also another car, the tub went horribly wrong this time at the end, I think the thingiverse submitter changed something, the file name was updated, CRAP, ok so a 4 car set not 5, oh well

now I have to dig out the wheels from the barn workshop and glue everything together

I dipped the buckets into 170 deg water to distress the sides to make them less uniform and look a little banged up

the owner of the thingiverse file updated the tub, not sure if I like the new one, the old one looks a little better for 1/29, this new one is so LGb
