Large Scale Central

Mind running wild again - a logging caboose kitbash

After doing some looking at my USA work train I started looking at the crane tender and decided I would like a passenger car body on it instead, so the outside braced box was removed

When deciding what to do with it I started looking at a USA long caboose that I had sitting on a shelf, It lived outside for a while and had some damage (broken handrails, stack, missing windows etc…)

Then I started thinking (never a good thing)

hmmmm… I think I see my next caboose for the LLCo.

Update- the caboose frame had a date with my hand saw, the following was the result

here it is spliced back together, I was afraid the trucks might not clear each other but it looks like it will work out fine

and here it is with the shell sitting on it. I thought about leaving it like this without the roof over the steps like the Westside Lumber cabooses, but I think I will go with the original plan and use the original caboose roof

stay tuned…

Update: got the roof cut down to size. First I took a dremel and cut the outside bracing so the letterboard of the roof could slide down behind them

here is an overall shot of it together

and here is one of the loggers doing an inspection

This is definately going to be taller than my other cabooses since that is a 1:20 scale figure

stay tuned…

Aaron: interesting use of a caboose and looks good. Just one question? What do you plan on doing with the marker light you removed from the USA Caboose? I have been looking for a set of them to replace the missing ones on my caboose. USA doesn’t have any in stock, I have checked a number of times. If you are interested in selling them, I would be interested in buying them.

Dan S.

It’s odd…I like it! Looks like the roof isn’t fastened …are you gonna do interior?

Good job, Aaron!!!

That is a very unique bash up. It looks really rugged with that outside bracing. The colours remind me of a New York Central boxcar not that you will leave it like that.

Nicely done

Thank you everyone! Weather wasn’t the greatest today, but I still managed to slap on a coat of paint. It is a little bright right now, but we all know that won’t last lol

next I will add a tar paper roof and then to details

Rooster - I probably won’t be doing a full interior as the windows aren’t very big, but I will be doing an interior in the center around the cupola so you can see a person sitting in there

Todd - I was thinking of the NYC pacemaker cars before painting it, I should have put a logo on it

Dan - I have no use for the marker lights at this point, so if you would like them send me your address and I would be happy to send them your way. they are a little faded in color and the jewels are as well but I think they still work.

Nice bash Aaron

Aaron this is a greatjob but i though you told me you had too many cabooses.

Ohhh, really like that one! You got me looking thru my parts pile.

hehehe, I thought I smelled smoke lol

Dave, Is there such a thing. I do have too many but technically I sacrificed one to build one so it evens out. Thats my excuse and i’m stickin to it lol

Caboose should have been blue and white, to match one of his boxcabs…

No cause then you will just steal it!

Update: Got the tarpaper on the roof. for this I used some painters tape and painted it a flat black. I also got the roofwalks painted and back in place

and here is a close up shot

next new end ladders and details, then on to weathering

Aaron a great model, thanks for sharing your techniques.

With the wheels under this short of a unit, have you considered armored car?

Looks great.

Dennis

Update: got the end ladders finished. Instead of starting from scratch I decided to reuse the original USA ladders. A little K&S tubing fixed the length problem

and after a splash of paint, they were installed

I also added some Ozark marker lights and some flag holders. The holders were made from some copper K&S tubing flattened on one end and bent. the flags have yet to be made

Weathering has begun, so far I am using washes but will do a little dry brushing on the trucks and metal parts to create a look of rust

That looks great, Regards Ron.

Great Build I love the look
