Large Scale Central

Milk Car

To go in the Hotshot with the Mail car… like bread n butter. I started with a B’mann 20 foot express boxcar lettered for the Pennsylvania Union Line. It was short enough for what I wanted to do – and more importantly, it was here.

Then dug around until I found some pix of a New York Central wood milk car in my files.

Okay… We have a prototype, sort of. We’ll just ignore the passenger trucks and fishbelly frame, for now. The narrow end platform, handrail, and evaporator piping were easy enough.

Step and an extra grab were easy too. It will get reefer doors when I find cheap enough ones.-- at the moment they seem to want as much for the 4 doors as a whole car!

A quicky paint job with ‘straw’ and ‘brown oxide’, and renumber to #669 by the simple expediency of painting over the final 9. I left the “Pennsylvania” for now because the decals I have are white

I think the car end looks pretty good. Yes, I need to add the train lines yet, and switch over to double hooks on the couplers. The Barber trucks will get fitted with Ozark leaf springs and the “roller bearings” carved off and replaced with plain bearing lube doors

Still, not too awful bad for maybe 2 hours total of farting around on a snowy day.

2 hours of pharting! That has to be a world record.

Good project. I think I’m going to muck up some LGB cars in the future.

Your getting some collection. Nice work so far.

farting? does that mean, that you are hotglueing your models?

No room to collect. SWMBO is 'suggesting' I need to sell off MORE of the stuff that doesn't get run much, so she has room to put household stuff like dishes, clothes, towels and groceries.

You still have first dibs on the log cars and caboose… for another week.

Nope.... 'farting around' as in desperately trying to avoid doing the other things that I should be doing! Kind of creative procrastination.

oh - i understand. you still did not reach the stage to stay undisturbed, when doing plain nothing.

Now that’s a prototype just begging to be modeled. I thought I had enough projects already?

Nice conversion. Does this mean if you change the look of your cars you can keep them?

Of course.

Im going to pass on the log cars since Im making a few already. What caboose was that? I cant find what one you were selling.

Nope, I have to take them outside and run them more than twice.... then let them catch dust. Counting the girls stuff, and what is under construction I'm down to 10 locos (2 under construction, 5 are not mine), 11 passenger type cars (including this and the rpo, the only 2 that are mine), 30 or so freight cars (3/4 mine, about half are 2 axle Lehmann, 10 still under construction awaiting parts), and 4 cabeese. Of that, 6 pieces escaped the Skunkworks touch.

6 custom locos were already sold off in the last 6 months to help pay bills. – Stuff she says ‘needs’ to go at the moment; 3 log cars, a new green reefer, a side door logging caboose, a box worth of odd parts, and maybe 2 partial hoppers – or about a 20% reduction.

Either that, or she say I need a bigger shed or some closets to magically appear, and/or some bill collectors to disappear?..Helluva way to run a railroad!

Seriously though, there’s train stuff all through 2 bedrooms, in the livingroom, the kitchen, the hall, and the shed, so maybe she has a right to say cut it back… I guess?.. Especially on the days we need to pay stuff like vet bills or doctor co-pays… or she can’t find the table. (oops!)

Meanwhile I’m trying to condense and box up stuff so it isn’t quite so in her face. And sell off the worst ‘offenders’

Mik get a few of the rubermaid bins so you can keep it outside with the trains in it. I did that for a while worked great and cost a few dollars. Then you can keep the trains and gives you more space inside.

Currently I put my engines in a cabinet outside but all the other rolling stock parks in the train barn. Not only does it keep from carrying cars but it adds to operations when I have to build my trains to operate.

Pictures :P

I’m planning on building a removable “greenhouse” to cover the Yard. A budget solution so I don’t have to purchase more track.
Ralph

I had a “Eureka!” moment with the doors. They open inward, and didn’t have to work… soooooo

And finished… I figured that by 1960 milk service would have ended at least a decade earlier. - and cars used for storage usually don’t get washed very often.

Now all I need is a flat with low sides for a dandy work train! — AND, I think I have all the parts…

Well… As usual, I was wrong… I didn’t have all the parts. Just this much

What parts are you looking for?

need steps, grabs, hooks for both ends, clutter and all that jazz…
