Military Themes

Just wondering how many other people have a military theme of some kind on their railroads. On mine that started out as a heavy military presense the last remaining military equipment is being moved out by the National Guard to the California Military Museum at Camp Roberts. This old WW2-Korean War era tank sat on a pedastal by the old Camp Wilson site as a memorial.

The only remaining military presense will be stray soldiers from nearby Fort Irwin checking out the illicit action in Wilson Valley. IMG]

I have the beginnings of a Civil War era layout. One build I have on the drawingboard is" The Dictator" 13" rail-mounted mortar. Nice use of the vehicles.

I’ve got this …

I’ve got one AMS US Navy boxcar, and the potential for a few others, as there is a “military chapter” in the developing history of the Slate Creek. Matthew (OV) (oh, and that’s TOC’s railroad, and his photo!)

Here’s a few 50 ft flatcar loads…

Those 1/18th scale airplanes, on LGB’s 50 ft flarcars… I have painted 4 of the flatcars for ““Department of the Air Force””, and marked them DAFX… The 1/32nd scale stuff just looked too small…

I have a tanker(USA trains?) with US Army Transportation Corps symbols on them-I was in the TC during my active duty time. They trained us young Lt’s on the trains some at Ft Eustis, VA, home of the TC. I have the Aristo Army boxcar on order also.

Just curious here—is it going to be a Yankee or Rebel Theme or both? Somewhere in one of my books there is a picture of a giant civil war mortar on a flat car and just looking at that makes me wonder what kind of recoil it had.

Matthew and Jerry: Over on EBay on the g gauge section of Model Trains if you do a search of Kline or K-Line sometimes you’ll run across the g gauge Army rolling stock that they made before they quit making G gauge and went to Lionel O. The cars are really good and come with the tanks, jeeps and half tracks on them. Metal wheels and Bachmann type couplers and really dependable. If you buy one of their Diesel engines though be aware that those Kline engines had problems since day one and every time I put one one the track I get nervous.

Interesting combination of railroad and military aviation to say the least. I notice the red star Mig figher. Probably flown to a US air field by a Russian pilot for the reward money and political asylum

I love the mix of Abrahms and Shermans with a bridge thrown in.

My first American locy will have the USMRR road name, but the conductor’s car will be a captured A&NCRR piece.

The 13" mortars on the shortened flatcars would be left un-chocked on the rails to allow for the recoil to roll the whole car back a dozen feet, I’ll guess. Often they would be used as siege guns placed on a curved section of track to permit aiming.

We tried that once.

My brother does period shooting (not powder at each other… live rounds at targets, but in uniform, etc.) Casts his own conical bullets, pours his own powder… really kind of neat.

He wants to be on the mortar team … but of course a 1:1 coehorn mortar is expensive.

So one year for Christmas I gave him a 1:10 scale mortar model. Came with a kit to build a wooden sled … the brass mortar shoots a 1 inch ball. (see “yorktown mortar” at http://www.cannon-mania.com/kits-functional.htm )

We tried it out in the backyard, and I got to thinking it looked about the right size for a large scale “Dictator” type car … I wanted to see how far the recoil would send the car … we figured a few 4’ lengths of straight track would do it.

We got a Bachmann 20’ flatcar and a couple lengths of track … put in a flagged ball, and about 50 grains … lit the fuse…

BOOM!

Mortar flipped over vertically (fortunately the sled didn’t break.) Car went galley west. Instead of rolling backwards, it flexed and jumped straight up from the rails landing about 2 feet from where it started… but was otherwise undamaged. Ball went about 50 yards into the woods.

Ah well.
