Uh, oh. I need to make an adjustment to my plans. I got the first chute shute shoot built (no pictures yest, hasn’t happened?) but I need to adjust the angle. I’m not mining bowling balls.
John is a stickler for accuracy. Which is a good thing. But i float between reality and what looks okay to me. Error on the side of doing it accurate. John’s right they usually are fairly steep. I have looked at a lot lately and even 45 might be on the flat side.
I thought about this some and came to a conclusion; It needs to look like it can function.
I’m not a stickler on measurements, ‘near 45degrees’ was close enough.

Hmmm I think you guys are right the 45 degree angle would be necessary to keep that coal falling out.
I used 10 degrees for everything cause I thought it looked good in my tight spot and with this condensed build. The further along this build comes the more I’m convinced that this will be a non working tipple.
I have been busy the last few days.
The winch house is planked.
Here is the chute getting ready to go in for test fitting but not ready for the final install because the roof to the shop needs to be slid in through the side first.
More planking is done, the door frames are on, one at each end, there is no room for a window, the stand for the workers is on, a ladder made from 2 strips of wood and brad nails is test fitted ( I need to make another) and what I would call the weather shield for the chute is being placed.
The roof sections are being made from the coroplast. The whole tipple will get a bath in ink and then the shop and winch house will be painted red. That is the plan right now.

That is the plan and a pile was recently delivered just in time for our fast approaching deadline.
That is a good idea John but I have made the executive decision to not have this as a working tipple. When I built my mine facility years ago I had the clever idea to leave one section of roof to be removable.
I had made coal loads out of foam and thought it would be a good place to store them when the cars were running empty. I never used it once.
The chute will go up and down and nothing but imagination will pour out.
I have been busy on everything but trains and this project but Saturday I had some time and decided that I really liked the ladder so I made 2 more long ones and since a ladder usually goes somewhere I figured why not go up to the winch house. The next step was to make a door using bits of the 2x4 and coffee stir sticks.
Looking at this photo I think a platform will need to be built for the workers safety.
Here is the build so far as it nears completion. Next up is to figure out a way to attach the chute, build a balcony safety platform, stain the entire structure, attach the ladders and then paint and put the Taylor Tin on the roof. There is still lots of time right?
I was curious about the number of pieces that have gone into this tipple and I counted 311 so far! That is a lot of measuring, cutting, trimming, sanding, gluing and nailing !

I can’t claim the ladder idea. A train guy I knew years ago gave me the idea and he probably picked up from someone else and I tweaked it a bit. It is a clever and relatively easy way to make a convincing ladder. I took several photos of the last one being built and might just see if Garden Railways Mag. would be interested.
You are right Dan, there needs to be a walkway and a platform.

Well if we are all thieves then I really don’t feel bad (here’s a secret, i never did anyway).
OSHA paid us a visit today and they demanded that there be walkways and platforms built for the safety of the workers and we had no choice but to comply.
It didn’t take too long and the men are happy.
I also started working on the chute section and I am trying to make it convincing enough to convey the idea that it works but that is easier said than done of course. I have to get going on this because it will be a full day to stain and dry and then the winch house and shop need to be painted and then the tin roof can go on.
The ladders, walkways and platforms really are nice finishing touches.

Today the tipple was stained using minwax and a spray bottle. I forgot to take a photo.
I’m still working on a convincing lift/ lever for the chute. If the stain is dry enough tomorrow I will paint.
