Mik's Build Challenge 2014 Official Voting Thread

I am puzzled by this. There is, in my opinion, a very fine model which has been voted for in this thread, It is not 1:20;3 so I have not voted for it here. But I feel it was an excellent build and would have been high on my choices.

However, I am quite happy to have been involved whatever the scales.

My vote is

Best Build Doc Tom

Best Log Doc Tom

Who said its a finescale contest? It never has been.

Best Build- Boomer K’s Bupp’s Fireworks Stand, the hand made details are incredible and seem to tax the abilities at times. Making some of those fireworks had to be a challenge by themselves.

Best Log-Doc Grabenstein’s Fish Camp Company store. Reading Doc’s log is at times like sitting on the general store porch, playing a game of checkers and swapping stories just to pass the time.

Damn there are some great builds this year, and it was very hard to make the choices. It really does look like everyone really stretched their abilities to create some unique pieces. Good luck to all.

Alan,

I think you misinterpreted Rule #1

Rule #1: Remember this is a “Fun Build Amongst Friends”

The 2014 challenge shall be: Build a structure attached to the provided door.

Each participant will be provided a door to build out from. The same door in 1:20.3 scale, 1:22.5 scale, and 1:30.5 scale ( compromise for 29 and 32 scale).

I am under the impression that any scale is fair game as Dave provided various scale doors. Maybe I’m wrong, but that is how I see it.

It is how I read Boomer’s post on 21st,. The scale is mentioned twice and not all the names in the Challenge are listed,

It’s a prize for a sub-category build. He’s donating Fn3 figures to a Fn3 builder.

my model is Fn1:24G

I wish I can vote for all the builds. Everyone did such a great job.

Best build log Doc Tom. I love the historical photos etc…

Best build is tough but I have to go with Boomers firework stand. I love all the details.

Where is a category for the 10’ rule folks?

I quoted Alan because it was the closest statement to my feelings,

After the fact the subcategories were all 1:20 AS If only those counted…

Shouldn’t models all be equal regardless of ‘scale’, one could have traded the prizes…

I felt part of the contest and then ignored at the banquet…and excluded from the frills. Excuse me for speaking out.

Been fun.

My vote for best build: Aaron Loyet’s “Mik’s Salvage Co.”

For build log: Doc Tom’s “Fish Camp Store”

These were not easy decisions - everyone did a great job.

NOTE for clarification:

Rule #1 applies. This has never been, nor will it ever be, A scale specific build. Anyone trying to make it one will get a 10 minute “Time out” in the corner with there preferred beverage.

The “Add On” prizes were offered up by their donors to sweeten the pot and share the wealth. I let the donors decide on the winners of each “add on” prize, based on what ever they wanted to base it upon.

One donor was giving a vehicle, and chose to give it to someone that used vehicles in their build. Another had a 1:20 size prize, and thought that giving it to a 1:20 build made more sense then to a 1:32 build, Etc.

The “Add on” Prizes I’m sure will grow every year, but the uncertainty of what they will be year to year, makes it impossible to set categories ahead of time, for unknown prizes. Donors offered up the prizes without even knowing whether the build was going to be rolling stock, Structures, or some other bizarre build.

With the “Build Challenge” being unknown up to the last minute, No one can get a head start on the others just to try to win a known prize.

Have fun and run trains.

Boomer: NO CAN DO… Nah Nah… NO NO. Take a beverage to the corner…

Alll Disregard his request to withdraw…

See above post.

Boomer see my reply in the ORIGINAL thread by Dave Taylor

Teacup tempests aside

Best Building:

Boomers Fireworks Stand

Best Building Log:

Boomer again, made me want to make my own fireworks stand

The Spirit of Mik Award choice has been forwarded to Dave and will be announced after the votes are tallied. I will say it VERY hard to make a choice, as all the entries were excellent, but I had to chose a few from many then just 2, then just one, I will say it was a very close decision, but in the end I chose that build that I felt best exemplified Allen’s Silk Purse from Sows Ear use whatever you got approach to building, again it was very close.

First off, congratulations to everyone, you are all winners. And thank you to Dave Taylor for organizing it all and supplying the doors. It was a very tough choice but after studying all the entries these are my choices

BEST BUILD- Doug Arnolds’ Undertaker. I thought that Dougs build really captured the character of the buildings in the rough and tumble frontier towns of the turn of the century.

BEST BUILD LOG: Doc Toms Fish Camp Store. The story and characters, along with the original photos really made for an informative and interesting build.

Ron

I have to say this years challenge has been the best ever! All different interests and skill levels. “Dave a huge thank you for putting this all together and sticking to the listed rules!” I have been stewing on this for a while and I would like to congratulate ALL the builders that have entered! I was blown away at some of the ideas and the approach on how to get it done.

I loved how Cale started out with a chainsaw. John Caughney’s use of materials was very cool and a very interesting building to boot. Doug and Lou educated themselves (see your never to old to learn). I especially like how Tom Huisenga involved his son Cody (every so often we have a debate here on how to attract kids into the hobby …well that is how you do it, you involve them!)

I could go on and on but I will “Shut up Rooster” and place my vote!

Best Build …Aaron Loyets " Miks Salvage Co. " (great job)

Best Build Log… Boomer ( I like his demented sense of humor and just the sickening fact he’s a detail freak!)

Side note …Doc Tom’s build log was fantastic as always and you need to be writing short novels Doc . I voted for your build log last year and it was a hard toss up between you and Boomer.

Once again "Congratulation’s to all that entered as you have some very cool additions to your RR’s

Ye Gads! Don’t undo anything!

With the mention of ‘multiple’ categories I, me, myself and just me decided there would be something for those of us short on fiddlies, yeah the old 10’ rule. My environment makes me bitter when I try to add those wonderful extras… like Elmer Fudd I’ma gonna get those rascally rascals!

I voted for John P and Doc, they won those categories and Cale won the Spirit of Mik award in my mind…

I apologize for ruffling feathers, I regret starting this.

Next year I’ll offer my Freight and Pawn Shed as the G24 prize, you pay shipping!

Could a sworn it Was the Right side of the bed…

John

I told you switching to decaf was a mistake, John.

If you get snow you can always mail it!

I like the Fairhaven gas station build. The roof and paint job appeal to me.

David Maynards blog how he did some features that I think are clever, so I vote for that as best blog.
