Rule #1 trumps all other rules in my opinion. I am also intrigued by the use of a small horizontal boiler instead of a vertical one. They must have went out a pilfered a small steam tractor. I had considered this exact thing for my build and had I not come across a steam donkey in my newly acquired parts bin probably would have went the horizontal route. It just isn’t something many people model but was likely very very common in the day.

About a week has passed and I’ve completed three more major components of the build, an engine shed, a winch for the bailer, and the bull wheel. The shed houses a one-cylinder engine that powers the walking beam, a bailer is a tube with a self-closing valve on the bottom that is dropped into the hole (after water is added) to remove the broken up rock and earth. The bull wheel is a large spool that holds the cable with the drill bit attached to the end. It can also be used to position the casings that go into the hole. Here’s a bunch of pics.
The shed. It’s supposed to be pretty basic, no frills. I had a bunch of thin end-strips left over from another project. They were rough and really varied in texture and color. I hand-made the small window and doors. The roof is good old cutup soda cans sprayed with cold galvanizing compound. I had to resist the urge to sand and use wood filler.

The bailer winch. It’s driven by the steam engine. I raided my wife’s quilting supplies to find a suitable “cable”. Unfortunately, it was the wrong color so I hand painted about forty feet of it a dark metallic.

The bull wheel was a challenge. It’s a big spool with one wheel that takes a drive belt for power when the cable needs to be raised.
I started out with a 3.5" ABS drain pipe and a 0.5" PVC irrigation pipe.

Spokes were added. Please notice that they do not go directly out from the hub but are cambered instead. I’m not sure why, but every historical picture I found had them built this way.

Now for the cable. I looked and looked for a suitable candidate and finally found it in my workshop. It’s that bright pink line used to set foundation lines on construction sites. Its made of a plastic polymer so I couldn’t stain or bleach it. I wound up applying black shoe polish followed by touches of black spray paint and finally touches of a Rustoleum metallic spray paint.

Here are a few pics of some components of the build coming together.
First up are the pipes! I rummaged around the house and found a box of pencils. I cored out one end and cut the eraser off of the other. Then I glued two of them together. Here they are awaiting a coat of primer. Cheap solution!

Next up is the temper screw. That’s the device that connects the walking beam to the cable and the drill bit. The operator can turn the screw and let the cable down into the hole a little at a time. Here is the assembly being glued up. I made it out of a piece of brass rod and scrap plastic. The whole assembly is 5 inches long.

Cabling. I got the cable from the bull wheel to the temper screw and down the hole hooked up. I also connected the cable from the sand winch to the bailer, the line is thin so its hard to see. You can also see the pencil pipes.

Aren’t you the one who said they didn’t know about derrick construction? Didn’t I read that? because this is a lesson on how one is build. I pretty sure I could take this thread and build a 1:1 oil rig in my back yard.

AMAZING! I’m really loving the details. The cables look awesome, shoe polish and paint and to think I took the easy route when building my crane and used black 80 pound stranded fishing line.
Great stuff here and the fact you are scrounging around the house for parts is cool.
