MIKs 2015 Eric's Rookie build

With all this cold weather, Moose has been complaining about not having a proper fur coat. Its dang cold even inside here in Phippsburg! Moose mutters “cheap SOB won’t turn up the thermostat”

I decided it was time. As I didn’t happen to have a moose’s coat in my scrap bin, I went looking on line for what one should look like. then I got out my acrylic craft paints and went at it. a little brown, a little black and some “flesh” mixed on a Yogurt container top with the brush, slathered on did the trick. I tried not to mix the paints perfectly and let the brush strokes show to look like a proper fur coat.

The face is a bit tricky but this is what I came up with:

I also made some fuel for the prime mover…little bits of epoxy left over from fixing my hat and gloves.

If you give a moose a muffin there is no end to the adventures you can have!

Eric: This imaginative build has been tremendous fun to watch, and it’s great to see your talents at work, especially the whittlin’, which we see so little of nowadays… Thanks for sharing!

Moose is just priceless!

Here is the motor I am using. I got several of thes micro gear motors for projects such as this from Phils Narrow gauge http://www.philsnarrowgauge.com/Parts.html

remember I am 7/8th scale so it is not quite as small as it would be if I was 1:32! it is about an inch long with a 3mm shaft.

I also started work on the mechanism to make Moose’s legs go when he is running the treadmill. it will start with a crank shaft geared to the main treadmill gear

Looks like your haveing fun. What brand of pin nailer did you buy?

Thanks Ron!

I am not sure what brand…I’ll have to check…I got it used along with a bunch of pins.

You made the crankshaft??? Nice!

Is that Silver Soldered? A little over kill? This just keeps getting more interesting.

Eric,

I mean take pity on the rest of us. I make a straight shaft out of Styrene rod and puff out my chest and display my shiny tail feathers then you go and make a real crank shaft. Insert pin in ballon… pop!!!

Excellent job. You are all over rule #1. Keep it up I am seriously entertained.

Devon, Well…I have been playing in the shop since I was a kid…I am no longer. I gotta work pretty hard to make rule #1!

Ron, I checked the pin nailer as I couldnt recall the brand and it is “GREX” … lime green and air powered!

I used the pin nailer to make an operator’s/moose feeder’s platform. I picked up a passenger platform I had made for the car that became my Dora Rail Bus and thought to use that, but it was just too clean and new looking, so I busted out my saw and pin nailer and made a new rougher looking platform.

It is much safer, I fell of the front of the chariot during testing and busted my hat again, had to get out the super glue and epoxy, moose will have to touch up the blue for me! I still have to make the brake rigging and “power switch”

Moose is really pretty lazy. I think I will have to encourage him to walk. I started by adding connecting rods to his legs:

Well done, Cant wait to see it on your layout.

Thanks, Ron! Me either. It might be a while. Another 10 or so inches of snow due tomorrow!

This is really turning out nicely. Looking forward to the moose-animation movie that is sure to come. Your vid’s are always a lot of fun.

Doc Tom

Yey I here you Eric 12 to 14 inches here tomorrow.

Very Cool!!!

That Moose is great

Whoa, Eric…everything about your build is exactly what we’re all hoping to achieve: a great idea with humor and believability all wrapped up together, creativity in planning, craftsmanship and ingenuity with raw materials, great details. I think you’re what the Challenge is all about.
