At the risk of raising eyebrows again , hearing sighs of on gawd it’s him again , and above all , not wishing to detract from Hans’ very important whingeing about LGB (he was frightened by a German when he was young -yesterday) I offer the following .
Someone sent me a missive from “ZANGO” . This caused Microsoft to shut down my Internet Ex , and sent me into the BIG CHECKING programme .
It found that ZANGO had infected my computer and it could not be moved , although its effects have been nullified .
So much for my costly anti virus programmes and anti spyware muck .
Ok Hans , you can carry on moaning now .
Mike

Sorry to hear about your computer problems, looks like someone has your “number”.
It’s either that or you have seriously offended the “computer gods”, take your pick!
BTW are you trying to tell me that I should only “whinge” when you have computer problems? I don’t have that much time.
And I am old enough to know better , Ric .
Mike
ps what’s the address of these porn sites?
ps what’s the address of these porn sites?
Just watch the Bachmann Forum regularly.
You’ll see.
What ASW and AV programs you running?
If it’s nullified, it’s no problem, and the shutdown in some protection programs is precautionary.
Some will fully remove it on next reboot.
Thanks , Dave , I didn’t know that .
I stopped using Norton because I was advised it’s crap , and am using EZ instead .
My problem is lack of knowledge coupled with memory malfunction . Where does one find info about what best to use ? Most sites seem mad keen to slag everyone else off and not be too definitive about their own stuff .
The manner in which the bug arrived was quite innocent , the pictures of AFV’s came through as an attachment to an email which had been scanned (it said) so on the face of it I did nothing to encourage it . Can’t win sometimes , but as you say , Microsoft managed to nullify it , so I am back on line ,and hopefully , no harm done .

I use AVG, which is free, as an AV.
I use Spyware Doctor (purchased) which is GOOD.
I use AdAware with the purchase add-on AdWatch which stops a bunch.
I use Spyware Blaster, which is also free, in the background.
SpyBot is run regularly (also free).
The absolutely most worthless and troublesome seems to be MS, first the Giant ASW, now Defender.
They try to get “genuine advantage” loaded on you, try to have GA Notify talk back to MS (I have a program that kills “notify”).
I have never had Defender catch anything, ever.
I unloaded it off my wife’s computer, I have recently killed the auto updates on mine, I will probably un-install it shortly.
All ASW programs catch different things, so I have several.
You want a thrill, look at the complaints on the MS Defender stuff:
Glad your back and bug free.
Regular use of SpyBot and Ad-aware seem to catch most stuff.
Top anti-virus programs are Norton and McAfee, BUT they are primarily anti-virus, just so so on spyware, and pretty ineffective on browser hijacks.
I have had every program catch something different. Windows defender is good for one thing in my book, defending Internet Explorer. It’s good against browser hijacks, where you don’t go where you want, or downloading is killed, etc.
I use an after-market firewall, ZoneAlarm Pro. It catches anything that is unauthorize to come in, and more importantly go out of your computer.
I run all the programs at about 3 am every night. It’s very rare when I have a problem. Oh, I also manage the IT department for our company, about 8 servers and 550 computers. Similar experiences on our computers.
Regards, Greg
