Ok, I can’t get the chuff to work on the new engine block. I switched those two ribbon plugs around, but nadda ! If I pull the plug off while it’s running then it makes noises.Does it have anything to do with the RCS system.
Thanks

Which Mikado?
Which sound?
Which RCS?
No.
It worked before, right?
There is the chuff sensor, the whistle and bell triggers.
You didn’t send them the entire loco, did you?
I had extensively modified the innards so the stupid decoder wouldn’t fry.
You have a chassis problem, drop the chassis and send JUST the chassis back!
All I can figure, if you didn’t send them the entire loco, is they screwed up the chuff unit or swapped some wires around.
You unplug the main plug and the chuff then works?
Been a while since I did one…I think it’s a single 5 or 6 wire plug that controls bell, whistle and chuff.
The wires to the whistle and bell should have been cut and fed to the RCS triggers.
I did not touch any of your work Dave . I’m sorry I should clarify, the chuff runs for a second or two when unplugged.
I only sent the chassis and got a totally new one back. There’s that pc board that has the sensors over the axle. There must be a magnet on the axle. Guess I will open it up later.

Bryan. Which Mikado? LGB Which sound? LGB Which RCS?
That picture of yours freaks me out Tony !
Ok, I took it apart and found the problem. The pc board that goes on the chass near the wheels has two chips soldered on . One for chuff and one for sounds for a magnet contact. Both chips were just sitting on the board, not soldered. Held on by gear oil only sticking to the board. I will call today and see if they have a replacement, and also resolder them on.
Nice for $150 Huh ?
Who fixed it?
Just send the board, not the whole chassis.
Back when LGBoA was in business, I would just send them the fried components for replacements.
Saves money on freight.

Well I called Silvergate today. They were nice about the problem and are sending a replacement board out tomorrow, Yipee !
Well I got the replacement board. And still no chuff sound, any ideas ? Is there supposed to be a magnet on the wheels.
No.
There is what looks like a washer that is loose on the axle that the Hall-Effect switch fits around.
Usually.
This little stuff frustrates the crap out of Me . Ok the washer is there, They sent me two boards, one board looks like a chip is bad. No chuff except when I hold in the side button on the RCS and push the bell button frequently I get the chuff sound with it ! What do you think of that Tony, Dave? Did you get the email I sent you a few days ago Dave ?
Bryan.
I am sorry to hear of the problem but I have no idea how the system was wired in.
I am sure Dave will take care of the problem.
Don’t cha just love this?
“I’m mad at the (fill in the blank) so I’m really gonna screw this up.”
Sometimes I wonder if that is what happened to my Dodge pickup.
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I happened to wander into Main Engine Room #2 to check on my first aid box, just in time to find one of the yardbirds attempting to cut one of the main power cables with a giant bolt cutter. After stopping him, and calling Security, and having him hauled off, I found out that the cable was “live.” That sure would have been exciting. 440 volts, steel deck, water. Oh, yeah. exciting!
There was some sort of “labor unrest.”
I am wondering if there was a difference in the internals between early and late, with MTS and without.
The bell and whistle were either wired to replace the reed switches or parallel them, whatever you preferred.
If the main harness stayed with the loco, it’s a simple matter of plugging it in.
No chance of crossing the plugs up on the loco?
Yeah, I only sent in the chassis. Maybe those boards they sent me are bad.
I’ve switched the plugs around too. Puzzling !
Just checking.
Did the loco have a DCC decoder?
If so has it been removed and the dip switches set for analogue operation?
Hey the only person who’s had there hands in the engine is Dave ! this is just the motor chassis
Shouldn’t that read; “…who’s had “Their” hands in the engine…”…?
Just being picky, but too many times people are using the incorrect word out of the “There, their, and they’re, selection…”. To some it doesn’t seem to matter…so I’ll take the flak for even mentioning it, with the hope that some might appreciate the note that there is a difference…and YES; I too often make many spelling mistakes also, so I do not claim in any way, to be without sin…!!!
