If you really think about it, you would want a steam engine in a post apocalyptic world because you could use practically anything that burns as fuel. Diesel could be very hard to come by.
This is true but I’m thinking water could be hard to come by as well and diesels will burn more than just diesel.
Yes, good point. In the world of Max Rockatansky, though, internal combustion still rules. Maybe once all the guzzolene gets burned, the LL would be converted to external combustion like a steam turbine😁
Maybe you don’t want to drink it, but radioactive water will still turn to steam. 
Also gives one a nice localized “dirty bomb” as they ride through town.
