Mik 2019: McGillicuddy's Building Supply - Jon R.

if you can, (spacewise) it might be a good idea, to give the whole thing some depth.

where i used inserted pics or drawings in windows, i put them one inch behind the window openings.

that gave me enough space, to cover the backside of the wall with alu foil and hang a bulb or two to lighten up the pics.

Yes, that is the plan. Tonight’s project will be creating the framing to hang the foam on and install some RGB LED light strips to wash over the photos in any color I’m in the mood for (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif). I’m planning on 1.5" of open space behind the foam. I might change to a 3/4" foam for a lot of the face so the window openings are not so hard to cut.

The drawing goes on the large format printer tomorrow than I can figure out how I’m actually going to do this!

While I was bundling up files last night to take to work for printing; I experimented with adding some color to the black&white window frames. This is my attempt at electronic weathering. I think it came out OK…

That will be sized to scale then printed on vinyl. The vinyl will be applied to clear acrylic, then the vinyl cut away from the panes. I’d really love to have these printed but I would never have the patience to draw that detail in 3D!

McGillicuddy’s Building Supply had the $$$ for custom copper windows ?

Well… One of the interior shots are of a bottling plant - Whiskey maybe?? But I think they are Iron, painted to look like copper, then rusted where the paint flaked off. No?

You could put a shot like this …

No progress to report. Printing of the pattern has been delayed until at least late today due to paying work needing to get done.

I did spend the last few days beginning the bench work and finalizing the black interior background. As I was trying to figure out how to finish the scene near the pipe Sean’s idea of keeping the pipe in view and decorating it as a culvert drain got some thought. I need to review how the track will cross it to see if there is enough room to make it believable. Actually, my biggest unknown right now is how the two foreground tracks will be supported. The track leading to McGillicuddy’s will eventually be on a trestle. The middle one might be as well, only closer to level; not as steep. The foreground curve I would like to keep level. I wish my imagination worked well in 3D.

I have made a decision not to push in order and try and meet the deadline for the Mik contest. There are a lot of details that need to be addressed and I want to do this just once!

Might get a progress pic or two tonight.

Maybe you need to start an article on the build then …

What I’ve been up to the last few days. 2x4’s, plywood, Black PVC and paint wrap vinyl (fun stuff btw). If this is considered part of my build Im just a few cents over budget!

Is your project a real facade or a very fancy computer mock up. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif). Just kidding. I am sure with your modeling talent that computer image will translate to an awesome facade

Well as it turns out…

I’ve decided that track planning, bench work and roadbed must come before this front is finalized. Therefore, I am officially dropping out of the race.

Thank you all for following along, encouragement and comments. I’ll move progress back over to my expansion thread later today.

Jon,

It’s a great build and I am taking away from it several techniques for my indoor build.

Jon,

Even though I gave you a bad time about it being a computer mock up and you didn’t get to the end, I am sure glad you are doing it and posting. I will for sure be stealing some of those techniques. Keep posting the results as this goes on. You do killer architectural detailing and the use of pictures both inside and outside is a very cool idea.

Remember rule #1 of the Mik Challenge as Dave posted! I personally see no reason why it cannot still be in the challenge.

I remember years ago Mik proudly posted that he purchased a new gun off e-bay however a few weeks later he posted that he could not afford a Turkey dinner for his family on Thanksgiving? I suggested he use the new gun that he purchased to go put diner on the table for the family but then it turned into how much ammunition costs so I suggested he sell the gun that he just purchased. Makes no difference and it’s a bottomless story but the challenge still stands and the idea behind it has INVOLVED new comers that wouldn’t post otherwise.

Personally I love the backdrops you are doing. However I’m no expert and nothing but a peckerhead (rooster) …good stuff Jon and I thank you along with others for inspiring me back in the day in the hood.

Rooz

You can’t drop out that easily, we take advantage of the ‘challenge’ to offer unrequested advice and we ain’t done yet!

Thank you all. I’ve moved my latest work over to the Willow Hill Expansion thread, which y’all probably have seen. When I get back to the building I’ll post here.

While I’ve been working on track track bed I have been thinking about McGillicuddy’s. My latest thought is to colorize the drawing then print on translucent vinyl mounted to clear acrylic. Might even be able to vary the building color with internal RGB/W/WW LEDs.

Jon

Hopefully you finish this , and not use Dan’s excuse for not finishing his pizza oven. " held up in design" (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Sean, it’s not held up in design. My work crew up and left me and said they were going on a mission trip to help some old man, a big black cat and a brown dog build some sort of train car (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)Word is they have completed their work and headed back home to finish up the oven (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)Time will tell.
