Michigan Coffee Car Repaint

Well, I figured it was time to start another project that may never get finished… This time it’s going to be a 53’ Evans Double Door Box Car. The donor car was one of the 2002 Aristo Craft FEC show cars. When it’s done, she’ll be a slightly beat up repainted Michigan Coffee Car. I’ll post pictures as I go. The first shot is the car in stock form with the truck mounted couplers removed. Kadee body mount couplers will go back on with nice draft gear boxes for smooth starts.

Here’s the first part of the repaint.

And in one of Jonathan’s N scale magazines they had an interesting article about over spraying the roof on box cars. The idea is to duplicate the way cars are repainted in the shops. The sides are prepped and painted while the roof is left alone to catch all the over spray from the work done while the car is in the shop. I thought I’d give it a try on the coffee car to see if I like the effect. Here’s what it looks like now but it may be better after the roof gets a bit of weathering done later.

Here’s the second part of the new paint job… I did a quick tape job and loosely covered the top of the car with newspaper and shot the second color onto the car. I decided to paint the ends a solid color instead of making it two colors like the sides. I think it gives a more prototypical style to it. Also note the top half of the car looks more yellow in these shots. It’s really a aged white color though. It looks much more white in real life, more of an antique tinge if you will. I’m not too worried about the touch up work along the taped edge’s where the bars, ladders or edges are either. Most likely they will get rusted and weathered so you’ll never see them anyway.

I made a full set of decals appropriate for a 53 foot Evans double door car too. Right now they are all black with a few white spots but I may change the color for the decals on the darker lower portion. I was thinking about making something close to the color of the aged white on the top half of the car. I’ve actually been mulling over the color of decals for weeks but can’t decide. The black decal sheet.

The white decal sheet complete with crop (cut) marks.

So, anyone want an update on this car? I kicked it the other night while looking around for something and thought I’d blow off the webs and glue the broken detail parts back on (you know, broken from being kicked around for over a year). After that I thought “I should put a few more decals on while I’m at it”. So, I put a few more decals on the car too. Then last night I thought “I really should seal those decals”. So, I had my son dig out some Dullcote and I sprayed a nice thick layer on while standing in the garage which was at a chilling 18 degrees… And without further ado, I give you the official (one side done and un-weathered) Michigan Coffee Company Evans Double Plug car.

Note: The color looks better in real life. The lighting in the basement is a bit off. Jon.

Nice lookin! What color is that dark red?

Thanks Bob. The red is E/L Maroon (Polly Scale F414242) and the white is Aged White (Polly Scale F414131).

Jon.

That is a nice looking car. Maybe you can get the incentive to finish it now that you can see one side…

Actually, to finish it I need to replace the car number on the other side because I put it too low (part of it on the dark red) and install the new Kadee’s. I also want to weather it but I’m not sure how much yet.

Jon.

That looks nice, Jon. t didn’t take ALL that long.

I like to start with the india ink and alcohol mix to just dull the finish a bit. Then, maybe, put some weathering chalks on.

Very nice! I like the two-tone paint job.

Man that looks great.
Dave

That looks sharp! Your own design and decals Jon? Very, very nice.

Thanks Richard, guys.

The Michigan Coffee Company was owned and operated by my uncle until he retired in the mid 70’s. While he never had any train cars he did have a small fleet of delivery vans. This project was just for fun…

All the colors, text and markings are copied from old photo’s so they are as close as I can get them. I had to stretch some of the fonts to make them work but I think it was worth the effort. The coffee company logo is actually the real deal. The picture of the guy in the logo was my uncle. My cousin found what was left of a old bowling league shirt with the company logo on it and I took it and scanned it. The artwork wasn’t in very good condition so I made a new master from the scan of the original to use for the decals. The decals were made in Photoshop and printed on a LaserJet printer.

You’re lucky to have that info available to you. Made for a great model!

My dad had a couple of bobtail trucks and a semi for his cabinet business in the forties. I remember the trailer was very colorful with large paintings of cabinets on the sides and rear but alas, no photos. It’d make a dandy private owner boxcar too and I’d steal your idea.

Is there any chance you can find a relative or old family friend with some photos? Anything at all???

Jon.

Not much! I have a complicated family on Dad’s side that I won’t bore you with but there’s not much chance that any photos exist unless some stranger happened to take one.

Sorry Richard. But if you ever do find something or stumble across another person with something let me know. I’ll help you make some decals etc.

Jon.

Jon,
Real nice job! As a fellow Michigander I really can appreciate the reference to our “Mitten State”

Hey Fred, long time no talk!
