Hi guys just wondering if anyone has purchased large scale metal wheels from the train department i got a quote for 4.75 per axle same size as the Bachmann large metal wheels but these are all turned wheels look much better than Bachmann ones.
Tod,
Just my opinion, but for that price I can put metal wheels under two cars using the Bachmann wheels. Jason’s wheels are beautiful and top drawer quality, but my trains don’t sit on a shelf and aren’t built to contest quality. For a contest quality or shelf queen I would, but not for every day running stock.

And considering your location, that might amplify the difference.
Yes, with the wheels painted various shaded of rust and grime, its hard to tell what wheels are under that boxcar that just rolled by, 5 feet away.
Mate considering where you are enquiring postage is going to be a big slice as well
So who has the best price on Bachmann metal wheels guys in aus g scale is hard to get and i can normally buy from the USA with shipping and still save money than buying from here in Australia
Star Hobbies. I received a quote a few weeks ago of $65.00 for a case of 6 sets of four wheels sets. So that’s 24 axles for $2.71 an axle. They don’t do email well, I had to call them after three attempts to send them an email.

Hi Tod:
This is a bit off subject, but I am curious about the state of the garden railway hobby in Australia. My daughter moved to Melbourne last year and I visted her for three weeks in April. I stopped by a couple of hobby shops but couldn’t get a feel for the hobby in your country. Just curious. I’d love to connect with a couple of local clubs next time I visit.

Hi joe only fairly small G scale HO AND N scale are the main interest down here in Aus Australian prototype in O scale is getting bigger at the moment and is amazing again all indoors i model NSWGR eg new south wales government railways in gauge one nothing of the shelves all scratch built but i love Australian trains especially our prized locomotive 3801 a 462 streamlined pacific our hobby shops here dont have much and some model railway shops really only stock HO and N scale i purchased a laser cutting machine last year and have sold a few of my building kits to people in America / Japan / UK / and New Zealand. cheers Tod.
In Australia look for the Sandstone and termite RR.
Greg’s comments about cost and availability are very interesting and what he does to save $$ is also interesting.
Greg Hunter has been to my layout and I took him to Charles RO.
He was amazed at what a US train store had in stock.
Greg is a good friend of mine havent seen him for years though
