Large Scale Central

Metal printing

In case you’re into this sort of thing…I learned yesterday that PCBWay has gone way beyond pc boards and is offering a lot of the 3d printing services that shapeways used to. Quoting is instant, and here’s an example:

These prices are for either aluminum or 316L stainless steel, and to me seem quite reasonable if you get 5 or more. Funny that the total price for 1, 2 or 5 is the same.

Cliff,

Recently i used Cloudcraft to make a pair of these. they are 1/6 scale and are a little over 3" wide. total was around $110.00 including shipping.

i am still very leery about tolerances. my experience with Shapeways a couple of years ago on some side and main rods, and found i had to tweak dims to get good center distances.

Al, that seems like a great price for 2 parts that large. Aluminum?

Too bad about the tolerances. Was the part shrinking or growing? Either way, it sounds like an expensive iterative process.

For my wheels (if I were doing that, but it’s for a later project), I’m assuming I’d have to go undersized on the bore, and drill them out. IIRC though, the printed stainless is super tough, and can wear out drill bits easily.

Cliff,

the shrink was not linear on side rods where dims are critical. end dims were good but o/a length was off. the Hancock was 316 stainless. the stuff i got from shapeways was hard as a rock. i had to by carbide tools to cut.
