Measuring track?

Anyone know of an easy way to measure the length of track on a layout?

I used a measuring wheel. I had it for when I did landscaping and used it to get yard size for ferts.
that could be hard for you seeing you have all mountains.

What you could do is tie a peice of string to on eof your locos have it pull it thought the mountain then measure it. Use a tape or wheel for the open sections. It will not be 100% but will get you close.

I use my measuring wheel. That could get pretty tricky on your layout, Ray.
I know Bruce and others have adapted bicycle speedometer computers for speed readings. They also have distance measurements built into them.

Not necessary with MY track. It's a 25-foot diameter circle with two tracks on it.

75.42 and 72.28 feet.

Smaller than most you use to put your trains on the track.

Ray,

Get a hold of Bruce Chandler, I think he built a car to do what your asking for. Maybe he will post here on it.

Yep, just use a bicycle speedometer/odometer. You can easily specify the diameter of the wheel in inches; just use the correct one for your scale. Attach a magnet to the wheel and position the sensor next to it. Then just run it out on the layout.
