McCain just gave a very classy speech

Classy–eloquent and dignified. Very impressive

I agree. That’s the old McCain that I remember. Very nice speech, genuine, I believe.

Yes, I listened to that, too. The comment from those North of the Border: “That is the McCain we missed during the campaign”

I agree. That was the McCain that ran in 2000, and if he ran as that McCain this year, we might be having a different conversation right now. One can hope that that’s the McCain that returns to the Senate. Like all who were elected to office tonight, time will tell.

Later,

K

I have just watched the McCain speech on our nightly news.
Diginified and gracious.
In the aftermath of this historic election, some of McCains supporters here in the forums who have been vitriolic in their attacks on the now President elect, would do well to take a leaf out of McCains book and adopt his generosity of spirit.

Rant on…

I really feel sorry for the guy, but McCain really had no chance.

He’s a decidedly Moderate candidate, that was what got him the nomination, but he was hated by the moral minority nutjob right wing of his own party, but in order to appeal to the nutjob right wing of his party he had to change his positions and started pandering to the right wing religious nutjobs in his party, that alienated alot of moderate republicans, then he brought on the Klampett family from Alaska, and after they got to hear more from her, the more moderates got scared off by her, so while McC was pandering to that small but vocal minority of his party he was also losing moderates, who defected to the Democrates. Add to this the failures of the current administration which was hung around his neck like an Albatros, and his unwillingness to stray too far from the official party doctrine or offer any really different path from the current administration, he was really hamstringed all throughout the campaign. Otherwise how else can you explain such an decisive victory? I always expected O to win but I thought it would have been much much closer to call.

I beleive some Republicans voted for O simply to keep the Klampetts from being one heart beat away from the presidency.

I have come to the conclusion that unless the rebublicans can figure out a way to muzzle the far right wing minority of there party and find a way to reach the moderate base, they will continue to lose ground. They have become commonly known as the party of the very wealthy elite and the religiously intolerant. if they dont evolve they will continue to deminish in influence and could shrink into obscurity, they wouldnt be the first party of the elite to dissappear, anyone rememeber the Whigs, or the Knownothing’s?

Heres something to consider, long ago I was a Republican, but I got soooo feed up with the constant pandering to the right wing religious nutjobs, claiming to be for the “working man” who would then get stabbed in the back with job losses and laize-faire attitudes toward multinational corporations who shipped those jobs and factories overseas so they could only pay a dollar a week to workers, combined with the “Whats wrong for you is OK for us” and the “only rich people matter, you dont” attitude and arrogance, just left me and apparently many many others, cold.

OK rant off…

Vic,

If he would be a real Maverick, he would have told the wing nuts to take a hike, headed for some real policies and … would have had a fighting chance.

I agree the speach was “classic” McCain. This was the man I supported 8 years ago and was saddened when he became ill and lost his shot at “W’s” job. I strongly believe had this McCain been out in force with a reasonable choice for V.P. the outcome could have been very different. I would have been happy to see a real contest.

As I said at the very begining, these are two fine men.

By the way, Ms. Palin also was most cordial, said she would do all she could as Gov. of Alaska to serve. Agree with their politics or not, a class act indeed.
