Maynard's 2017 Entry

Well, around here it was vacant for a while, and then some other business has moved into it. I do not know if the vault door is still in there, but I suspect it is. Them suckers tend to be a bit heavy.

Ok, tonight I went looking, and the pillars/columns were right where they should have been. OMG! I was actually organized on this one item? Shocker! In fact, in the box of building detail parts, I also found a roll of brick road. I bought it years ago during an after Christmas close out sale, even though it doesn’t look anything like the brick road that ran in front of the house I used to live in.

And, just to satisfy some of Yunz, I have a quickie drawing too.

On the, ah hum, “Napkin Drawing”, I noted that I may have to put the pillars/columns up on blocks. They may be too short. But then again, since the bank was a one story structure, with really high ceilings, I might be able to make them work without blocks.

I will turn the pillars and sketch over to Squint, the myopic city planner/building inspector and see what he comes up with.

Edit for Punk-she-a-shun

I considered gapping the stones as well. What are you going to grout them with?

Grout? Grout. Um, I was, well, um…

Good question.

White Putty or a matching colored wood putty?

How 'bout, uh, grout!!

I am going to go with the stacked stone/ blocks idea, less worry over details, more time to try some new things like making my own widows and other stuff I have never done before

I really am not worried about the grout/mortar. I am sure that I can come up with something when I get to that stage. On my Saw mill rebuild, I used almond coloured latex caulk.

Mortar? Why did you have to bring that up? I didn’t even think of that.

I’m with you Pete…I’ve never made a window ever. They could be my downfall on this build. I’m out of windows to cannibalize from other sources, and $30 doesn’t allow for a lot of fancy window buys. My biggest fear is that I make a half-way decent structure and then ruin it all with some junky windows. Yikes.

…and by the way Maynard, thanks for wrecking my resolve to throw out extraneous stuff cluttering up space, stuff that in a million years I’ll never use. Here you are collecting totally useless stupid items like wedding cake columns…then…out of nowhere…bam!!.. you find a use for them. Not only that, but, even more impressive, you were actually able to FIND them. Now what can I throw out? Thanks again.

LOL John. I am sorry that I ruined your life. That was not my intention.

I had to bring up mortar, because I notice mortar joints on buildings, even stone buildings, and I notice when its not there on models.

As for the columns, I bought those many years ago for building the bank. In my box of building detail parts, I have stuff I have collected over the years for my “someday” projects. The list is always in my mind, and when I see something that just “fits” one of those projects, I buy it and toss it into the box.

As for needing windows, I make my own. http://largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/20900/quick-and-dirty-window-jig/view/post_id/236740 You might give it a try.

The building corner stone assemblies are going together, slowly. It seams that the stones aren’t all exactly the same size. So as I build the right hand one, I am also building the left hand one and “adjusting” the stones on the left hand one so they nearly match the right hand one.

Once the corner assemblies are done, then I need to make the center assemblies, also trying to match them up with the right hand corner assembly. Between letting the glue dry, and adjusting as I go, this part is taking longer then I thought it would.

I like the latex caulk idea.

It’s quite simple and works very well for modeling outdoors. Makes an “excellent” glue for composite materials as well.

David thanks for the window jig idea, I am going with that , not as intricate as youse guys back east, at least not for the first time trying.

Very nice rust color on that right angle…very convincing. And nice socks, too. They look warm!

Yup. Some of my tools are older then I am. And I don’t like it when my feet are cold.
