Maybe I've been living under a rock: New Bachmann?

Just got an RSS from the Durango Dan site … apparently Bachmann released a flyer today that, among the expected stuff announces a re-release of the 2-4-2 LYN and the Industrial 2-6-0 (the so called “Indy”) as well as a modified Climax and a boxcar with a new roof.

You probably all know this already … but if not, I figured it’d be worth mentioning!

I notice the Climax has been modified, or looks to have been modified, with a larger fuel bunker … I’m guessing that was to allow what would be the next (I’ve lost count) interface board to fit … but hey, more room is more room, and that’s a good thing.

Does anyone know the story of “Murphy Roof” equipped boxcars?

Oh, the link (if it’s more crowded under the rock than I thought…)

You’re not under a rock. Bachmann just posted that this morning. Glad to see the industrial Mogul and 2-4-2 back in the mix, if only for kitbash fodder. I suspect more folks will be inclined to do something cool with the Lyn than they would to cut up the outside-frame Forney for the same purposes. I just hope they’ve beefed up the mechanics. If memory serves, it was not one of Bachmann’s greatest.

As for the Murphy roof, I’m not sure why Dan is on about it being a “very” good thing, beyond the fact that a little variety is nice. I prefer the older style wood roof–it’s more in keeping with my time period. At this point, if I do any other box cars, it’d be a shorter 27’ car or something. (I’ve already got an AMS reefer being refitted to an EBT water car. Gotta figure the hatches in the roof have to be good for something.)

Later,

K

I’m glad they are bringing back the Indie! (I know what I want for Christmas now)… I just hope they added more weight.

Remind me to stock up on Delton c-16 cabs, they work a treat on the Indie

I have a NOS Indy I picked up a few years ago. Haven’t really run it at all. I knew when I bought it that it wasn’t a good puller. Do you have any photo examples of the C-16 cab on it? Would that make it look like a larger cab? I want to use mine in a 1:20 setting, but even for a tiny loco it looks way under-size.

Will this do?

or is this better?

Some lucky fella on evilbay owns it now.

I’m still under the rock.
What in the heck is a Murphy roof?

Thanks Mik - Yes. as that a larger tender also ? Nice proportions. Someday I’d like to try and convert mine into this…

Jon,
this was a way over the top design exercise, but I added a cab from a Buddy L. With additional weight the loco could easily haul in excess of 15 pieces of American style rolling stock. Ideally, domes etc., should have been made bigger, but it was really only a bit of fun. I cannot upload a photo as for some reason it appears as a website link when posted.

I spent quite a while with Google and finally came up with this photo of a model showing a rusty Murphy Roof…

Tim - Go ahead and post the photo as a link. I’ll see if I can make it display.

No, Jon, it’s the factory tender, but that hideous factory coal load went bye-bye, and a few other minor revisions. BTW, Botchmann built the Hawaii #5 first, the drive sucked… so they took the weight out, put in a circuit board, made a decent Mogul drive with no tractive effort because the thing is too light – and called it a ‘catalog’ engine… I’ve looked through the Baldwin Export Catalog… This is as close as it came… If that’s it, then the Indy’s boiler sits too high, and the cab is wrong

Hmmm, Go with the c-16 cab & tender shell, lower the boiler about 1/4"… Like I need another project! Especially since now I want TWO!

The cab is closer on this, but the boiler is STILL lower and…

Well… the history would dictate that it was originally the Hawaii #5 with a six wheel chassis… kind of a “cobbled” engine… originally it was thought to be one of the Fruit Growers engines at Hesston … but interestingly, it bears a striking resemblance to the Godchaux Sugar engine that was rebuilt into a completely new configuration and spent many years at Edaville before moving to Wisconsin to represent the once popular “Dinky” of Fennimore…

While we know that it’s not really the prototype, it is an interesting confluence of history, don’t you think?

I thought the Climax and the Murphy boxcar were On30, but I reread it sure enough LS, pity the Climax will be a tad pricey for me.

That Lynn sure is a nice looking little joker.
So is the industrial Mogul with having 2 sand domes. Also like look of how high cab sits above boiler.

Aha! working front couplers on both ;D

Having largely been raised in southeast US, even though it is UK’s Southern, would have to get Lyn then Americanize it with a bell and full size headlight, probably oil fired box style just because it would look quirky huge on that little thing.

Thanks for the link and photos guys , when I looked at the Bachmann new releases , I stopped and wished that the HO B&O BALDWIN MODERN 4-4-0 LOCOMOTIVE , was in large scale , what a beauty of a locomotive .
Nice looking new products all around , and eventually on close out sale at Trainworld at a better street price I hope .

When it first came out, B’mann did sell an Americanized version as a Coal Creek Lumber Co. engine. I have one and when my layout was track powered, I ran the heck out it. It’s a cute little engine.

Still have it, but haven’t converted it to batteries yet…

Hi Ken,

I looked at your pic - nice models by the way - and thought that looks somewhat British. I then read the type. lol

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway (after 1923 Southern Railway) ran the other side of my County, some 80+ miles away). The line was closed but is being rebuilt in parts (where possible and money allows) and older stock be re-built. Here are two links of interest - I hope.
