Large Scale Central

Marion, NC. Depot

Here is the Marion Depot. The addition was built in 1952. Styled like many post offices and other buildings of the 50’s.

The original Depot was built in 1867.

Track side of the 1952 addition.

Went up the tracks where Norfolk Southern and CSX cross.

On the other side a CSX signal shop. THE NS signals were green both directions. So we knew nothing was heading our way.

So we found our way down to the MOW unit.

A giant herbicide sprayer from what I can tell. You can see the unit is plumbed to the tank cars.

An old Family Line box converted for MOW.

We followed the CSX line north. The road pretty well followed the tracks. There were several places I wanted to stop, but my brother wanted to head to a certain crossing. Well we arrived at his crossing, just to see the tail end of the train crossing the road. The chase was on and we headed south to Thermal City. We had a few minutes to spare before the train arrived.

Nice pictures Ralph, the station is really neat. I wish people around our area would stop tearing down all of the historical buildings and building new ones. Years ago I found an old wooden train station in the back yard of a home less then 1 mile from my house. I was able to take pictures and measure the building with hopes of moving it to the local fair grounds that was less than a 1/2 mile away. The county wouldn’t allow us the permits and acouple years later the house was sold and the new owner dis-assembled the building for fire wood. Sad!

Thanks, Chuck.
Tearing down an old station for firewood, how sad.

I remember several years ago in Myrtle Beach when they tore down the Flatiron building. One of the few historic and unique
buildings in Myrtle Beach. I’ve not been to Myrtle Beach in several years now. I prefer to spend my money in Charleston,SC.
where they embrace history and historic structures.
