MALLARD and FIVE sister locomotives

My BIL spent yesterday up at the National Railway Museum York, UK, visiting with the six A4s on show there commemorating ‘Mallard’s’ WSR set back in 1938.

This is from him and shows just how much the UK public think about old locomotives…

‘Hello Tac…Had a good day at york yesterday. Sending you some pictures, but it was very difficult to get good ones. The engines were all front on to a turntable, which you can see from one of the pics. This made it very difficult to get pictures of the whole engine. But the main problem was, as you can see, the VAST crowds. Yesterday they had 7000 thru the entrance by 12pm !!! On Saturday last they had 14,000 before midday…Just not enough space between engines, and too many punters. Anyway, it was worth the visit, and had a good look round the rest of the site. The two engines from over the water, were, looking at pictures of them arriving at the docks, in a terrible state. The museum workshops did a brilliant external paint job on them, but goodness knows what the internal workings are like.’

I’ll try and find some way of posting images, but don’t hold your breath. Anyhow, you all know what an A4 looks like, eh?

So, I didn’t know what an A4 looked like so I googled the museum.

Nice article here: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/national-railway-museum-paul-routledge-2037175

Some lovely quotes:

National Railway Museum:
“We are delighted with the popularity of our Mallard75 event. As a result we’re currently experiencing a very high volume of visitors so please be prepared as you may have to queue when you arrive at the museum.”

From the Daily Mirror article linked above:
“Rod Stewart confessed his desire for a date, but he could only see her on screen.”
[Rod is a model railroader, I believe.]

“A mystery British millionaire tried to buy Dwight D Eisenhower while she’s over here, but she’s not for sale.” (that’s the locomotive from Green Bay Wisc.)

Wow!!! Some fabulous images there, Mr Thornton! Many thanks for making them accessible.
