Large Scale Central

Making the grade

Or, fixing it. Those of you that were here for TrainOps knew that I had a frost heave problem in the tunnel area by Pearce. When this track was built 6 years ago, it had a nice < 2% grade. Some spot measurements showed it rolling from almost level to 5% in areas. Combine that with the curve, and trains had a tough time making it up. Measuring the rise and run, it should be around 1.6%. So, time for some work! I took up all the track from the switch at Pearce, down to the switch for Majestic. I did a bit of re-leveling of the twin arch bridge leading into Majestic, and did a survey for what the next steps are going to be.

Yea, I KNOW all about frost heave…just ask me…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Bob, nothing like an Ops session to show all places that need work… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Tear the ladder out because you don’t need it?

I agree with Rooster. We are far enough north where frost heave is not an issue like our southern folk (insert banjo here). Guys in south jersey/PA have to worry about that more then us. Once the ground is frozen its frozen till spring.

That’s not what I was saying Shawn and perhaps you need to talk with one of the civil engineers at your park about frost heave…(wear your hat so they explain it to you gently).
