Major K27 overhaul

Greg,

The gear noise is sourced at the spur gear drive I purchased from Rodney Edington. There are a fair number of us on this forum that have them. They are noisey in part just due to spur gearing. Not sure of the rest. To the best of my knowledge, Rodney did apply grease at assembly, or at least I would sure hope so. Type undetermined. Most of the folks that have had their awhile report that the noise does abate after some run time. For the immediate future I am hesitant to disassemble the drive just for the inconvenience factor. After about six weeks working on it hit and miss I am ready for another project right now. Great suggestions and I will keep that in mind if I need to pursue further sound reduction.

I will admit it would be nice to hear from Rodney, as his site has been down for some time now. Would love a wellness’ report on both Rodney and Kristi if anyone knows.

Next up is a woodworking project to build a replacement transportation device for the Bachmann provided styrofoam. I have all the designs at hand, just need to move forward with it. Subject for another thread.

Right, I was completely aware of the drive, and that you had one. The stock worm gears don’t make that noise, and you mentioned the drive several times and it can be seen in some of the pictures.

I’d try getting that moly grease up in there to see if it helps… my best suggestion, and run it to break the gears in.

Congrats on getting to the end of your project (get that chuff timing working)

Regards, Greg

The gear noise on my K was quite noticeable when it first ran. It has since quieted down a whole lot. The sound system does hide a lot of it, but it was hardly noticeable when I ran it at Andy’s over the weekend.
