Majestic Colliery Rebuilt

Nice. One copy, then mold it, I presume? I’ll be VERY interested in how that turns out.

Possibly mold it, I’m not sure. Its in two parts, and the panes are kind of thin, so something besides resin would be stronger. We’ll see once it gets here and I pull a mold of it.

Prototype 3d printed window showed up last night. Not too bad.

Definitely better panes than I could do. The frame I’m going to try and make a mold of, and then cast the rest. If that doesnt work out, Ill build a jig and build them out of styrene. Pretty pricey for what they are, I think.

I intend to back the window with frosted acrylic, to give it the ‘dirty window’ look.

Interesting.

I was just thinking…have you thought about using 3D printing to create the mold, instead of a master? It SEEMS like that might be a better way to go for those panes.

Great minds think alike;)

Expensive, though. You pay for the plastic, basically. The panes were about $3.50, and the frame a bit over $10. Printed in the cheapest plastic they have. A mold would be $40-50, if I had to guess. Im thinking either make a mold of the frame, or build a jig and make them out of styrene. $14 for a window when I need a dozen, is a bit pricey.

Bob can you email me the window file?, i can tell you how much it would cost to make if you had your own printer. I’m thinking 20 cents each

Bob sent me the STL files last night, these windows are about 7 grams, PLA plastic retail is about 5 cents a gram. so if you had a 3d printer each window would be .35 cents each, which i’d reckon is dirt cheap compaired to castings

I’ll test print one and send it to Bob to compare with the shapeways one

Bob email me yer address, freebie coming your way…

Brownie points!!

Final prin was 8 grams , so 40 cents each for the set

Will send them out monday…

Great, thanks!

Here’s the window assembled and painted. I have it surrounded by some gray PVC board, and a piece of the corrugated siding for the colliery on the left.

Looking great, love the corrugated look.

Ditto

Thanks guys. The colliery is really going to look good, I think, when its done. I’ve learned a bunch of modeling techniques between when I built the original, and now. This one should looks MUCH better.

It’s only hearsay without pics…

Yep.

Pics or it never happened

You’ve seen pics of how far I’ve progressed so far.

Is it done yet???
