Maintenance log

does anybody keep a log (file) for individual cars for repairs - additions etc.

gabby

gabby,
I keep a listing of all my rolling stock categorized by manufacturer, with any changes I have made.
My locomotives have a particularly detailed description of any modifications or additions I have made. For instance: “Phoenix system installed with controls under water hatch of tender”. I also keep values of components used (560 ohm resister) incase there is a failure of a part I can make further changes to increase reliability. Things are always changing around here and I don’t always do the same mods to all locos. I found keeping a log is much more reliable than my memory. Nick Jr

I too like to kepp it written down rather than trust the old grey matter. I don’t go overboard - just things like kd couplers installed and the like. It’s amazing how much can be spent on one engine/car when going back over the log.

I know I should, but life’s too short…!!!

Na…

I regret to say that the discipline of log-keeping is too much like life in the services whereby you cover yourself
by logging all the lies you tell to keep the admin side happy . Tweaked this pot? Sign here . Changed this fuse ? Sign here . Been to the loo ? Sign here . Wanna gun ? Sign here . Fired your gun ? Board of inquiry .
Nah .

Mike,

I had an old master chief that always said “Its the same reason you wear pants”. He was truely the salt of the earth and someone I miss dearly. Taught me a lot of the important stuff in life.

Mike

After half my life (32 years) in the Army I guess it’s in the blood to be a little organised especially doing a removal every 2 years all over the place. Besides a bit of discipline dosn’t hurt anybody.

Ric

Sounds like your old master chief was a good bloke.

Oh , I didn’t mind the service dicipline–people’s lives depended on it .
I just don’t fancy carrying it around as a civvy .
My workshops in service used to glisten , were safe , and you knew where everything was . A tidy place produces a tidy job .
But I need a rest from it , and don’t get paid to do it . My time is better spent on enjoying things . But that’s just me .
