I have started building a powered broom car. The broom will be powered with a battery powered motor. It will be used to clean up the small twigs, leaves and grass clippings on the track.

When I built a track cleaner car, powering the brush was still a bit daunting. So I built an angled brush with a powered rail shiner in the middle of the chassis. Works fairly well, but you can see why the folks here nicknamed ir Groucho.

My spinning brush track cleaner just threw the debris over the car and back on
to he track behind it. 
I was going to angle it like a snow plow, but never got around to it.
Sweeping the track with a little long handles broom was much faster.

Try reversing the polarity to the motor.

I think a Railbroom is an essential piece of MOW equipment. I built one and it gets the first run every time.
Mine is track powered. The tank holds water that drips onto the roller and onto the track to loosen grime.
Here is a video of it in action. Maybe you will get some ideas for yours.
Since this video was made I ran a a plug that goes to my NW2 to connect the 2 and add extra track power pickups to the brush motor. The “dryer car” changed from rollers to pads and it now uses a flat piece that holds a piece of towel to help clean the track.

A little progress today, installed the bushings and belt that UPS delivered late yesterday. Waiting on the motor and battery.
It is coming along but if I may could I point out two potential spots of trouble?
Have you tried powering the broom with that belt? It looks too thick possibly too rigid. I use a thinner oring found at my local hardware store. Another spot of concern is that shield you built might be too low. It is possible for leaves, twigs and other bits to get stuck in the spinning broom, they do in mine, and by having the shield so close it might keep bits from being thrown clear.

Thanks for the comments, I can move the guard easily, I have not tried powering it yet waiting for the battery. I may change my pulleys too, after I see how fast it is going.
It does work better with the smaller belt. I think I need to change the pulleys, I think the brush needs to run faster. The motor is geared down to 600rpms and with the pulleys the brush is running to slow, I think.
What brush are you using?
Bottle brush from the local hardware store, cut the handle off and I pushed a piece of brass tubing over each end to make the twisted wire round to fit in the bushings.
The pulleys on mine are small. The one at the motor is only 1/2" diameter. The other is 3/4".
The motor is rated at 12 volts but I didn’t think that was enough. It ran slow and didn’t toss junk well so I boosted it up to about 14 volts. Mine is track powered so I listen to the motor as it makes the rounds and adjust the throttle accordingly.
The belt is under a slight tension so when the rig is done running I slip the belt off the pulley. This extends the life of it.
I use a DeWalt power drill battery to power my blower.
