Having lubed locos at Palm Desert’s Living Desert giant outdoor railway, access to plastic compatible gear oils and greases in bulk would be a big cost savings. Lubriplate offers “SPO” lubes and “FML” lubes both high quality and designed to operate on plastic and plastic derivitive gears and axles. They come in 7lb. cans, 2 lb. plastic bottles, and larger sizes.

The tech person at Lubriplate’s hdqtrs., offered that SPO-255 oil and FML-2 grease would be excellent for our applications. Both are used in food processing plants and are absolutely plastic compatible.

I found 20 within a drive of 4 miles to 25 miles from our home.

As to the content of the plastic compatible oil and grease:
SPO-255 (one of the SPO series) oil – a mineral oil base product.
FML-2 (one of the FML series) grease – a mineral oil/soap-based product.

Both the above are used in the food industry under high heat conditions for bearings, chains, etc.
This information came from a call to Lupriplate’s technical division. The two technical reps indicated both the above would work well with outdoor large scale loco motors and wheel axles.
