LSOL interviews Dave Buffington

DELETED

He’s very diplomatic and “smooth”. He could have been a politician. Not really a lot of meat in the interview though, in my opinion. He really did not get into the controversial stuff. Can’t say that I blame him.

Greg,

The next best thing to a politician is a publicist.

Dave Buffington used to be the LGB liaison on the Yahoo G Scale Group (a Group moderated by his ex-wife). Unfortunately the occasions where he could provide concrete technical information were not that numerous. Apparently much of the technical information is considered “proprietary” - a fact that is clearly reflected in the sparse (some refer to it as incomplete) info of the LGB manuals.

If the questions get too “precise” Dave Buffington has been known to take a “Time out”.

As far as I learned, a publicists job consists to a great extent of making sure that only the “right questions” get asked and that the interviewee has a long enough “story” in store to make time pass.

OTOH Dave Buffington did/does an excellent job selling the “Toy Trains” made by LGB.

PS His ex-wife also produced the now-defunct “Telegram” which was what the Depesche still is, an advertising vehicle for LGB’s products.

Yep, after listening to the full 29:29 min, I’d say “Vintage Buffington” with a lot of “I don’t know!”

Yep, bumped into him when I mistakenly thought the G-scale yahoo group was for G scale… talking about anything but LGB was pretty much given the cold shoulder. When I started paying attention, noticed the sponsors and main people were all LGB people. I participate in the group somewhat, and it’s loosened up since Frances no longer works for LGB (I believe).

Regards, Greg

The “I don’t know” count in reply to direct questions is: 6

The “It all depends on EPL” count is: 11

I would term the interview a “Soft lob and soft ball” affair! Considering that, the count is even more remarkable.
