Large Scale Central

LSOL going off line again

I dunno…have to Ask David M…Shannon Car Shops…Home of the Infamous LEg Lamp…

It’s a major award.

I’m assuming it’s the one from the movie “A Christmas Story”

You can buy your own…though I can’t imagine why anyone would want it…

Yes, I was “awarded” the Leg lamp, a smaller version then the one you posted a picture of, at an ECLSTS LSOL banquet. It sits on my bookshelf. I figure it was a “badge of shame” so I proudly display the thing.

That story needs a bit of additional background.

It’s still intact and not broken!

Ok, back when I was a new member to LSOL, and I had entered 3 scratch-built Billmeyer and Small passenger cars in the model contest, plus the kit-bashed Forney that pules those cars. So the comment was that I “had too much time on my hands, and that I needed a little leg.” Then I was “presented” with the leg lamp.

Beautiful set of cars!

Yea, what he said!..

Those are very nice. Do you have any pictures of the construction?

Oh yea, I have pictures of the construction. I guess my next task is to upload the pictures.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the compliments.

Ok, I have uploaded the pictures. They aren’t in order, but most of them are in my gallery. I tried to not upload the duplicates.

Very nice cars! and someone had a good sense of humour.

Those are awesome cars man! Welcome Aboard

Thank you, thank you.

David, Welcome Aboard!

I still have a copy of your article on hand painting the lettering rolling stock. Great article. I have never been able to match your quality.

Bob c.

Man, I almost “marked this as read” and moved on. What a loss that would have been.

Sometimes threads wonder for the worse and sometimes for the better. Those cars are great and the other pictures were good, too!

AWESOME WORK!!!

yes, very fine cars.

what type of wood do you use?

and a welcome!

Thank you very much Guys.

Bob I still hand letter that way, I am cheap and don’t want to spend the money for letters I will never use. I even hand lettered a set of Penn Central, HO F7s. No, I will not do that again! My eyes are still a bit crossed from that project.

The passenger cars are basswood. I bought sheets of it from the craft store, and cut it into strips on my Proxxon table saw. The stain was some thinned water based chocolate brown paint, also from the craft store.

Welcome David. Excellent scratchbuilt cars. Quite out of the ordinary.

Doc Watson

How is anyone else going to see those cars in this stupid thread.

David,

Start a new one in the modeling forum.

Quite correct John,

I think these lovely cars are the first Billmeyer and Small models I have seen. Usually the are J&S cars that seem to be in the limelight.

Thanks John, maybe I should start a thread there.

Alan, I saw a postcard of the Pittsburgh and Castle Shannon Railroad, it was of 2 Billmeyer and Small cars behind locomotive number 7, a Forney. So I had to model that train. The build of those cars was off and on for 2 years. They were my first attempt at scratch-building large scale passenger cars.
