Large Scale Central

LS Trains in Scranton, PA

I was just in Scranton at the Electric Trolley Museum on the Steamtown National Museum grounds to help setup for the display this weekend of large scale electric and live steam trains.

There are two live steam layouts, on large one smaller inside the trolley garages, and another large module for battery/track power trains.

There is a rumor if the weather is cooperative, the museum may run a trolley for passengers. I know of at least three LS clubs that will be displaying at this event.

Pennsylvania Garden Railway Society’s 14th Annual Winter Meet - President’s Day Weekend (February 19th, 20th & 21st, 2011) at Electric City Trolley Museum (next to Steamtown), Scanton, PA

I plan to be there Sunday - Shawn V. will be there Sunday. Trying to talk Rooster into making the trip. Ken ??

Would love too, as I haven’t been up there in a Loooooooooooooong while, but, alas, other plans have been made…you guys enjoy yourselves!

Jon I got your e-mail. I plan on being their for 10AM as well. Should only take me about an hour from my house. Should be fun. I heard if weather permits they will be running the trolley for rides.

The turn out was great today, AND the Electric Trolley # 80 (built in 1926) was running a 10 mile round trip through the Crown Avenue one mile long tunnel to the AA Yankee’s ball park and back.

The live steamers put on a good show. I stayed until the coal exhaust smoke gave me a headache.

Watch out for Jon and his sidekicks tomorrow David.

Never saw David, but did run into a few LSC regulars besides Shawn. Got lots of pictures, here is just a sampling: Don’t know who owns this 2 Cyl. Shay - it’s super detailed with a wooden cab…

Geoff Ringle` & Pete Thornton had most their superb 1:20.3 EBT models on the Warrior Run layout. Here is Pete’s Wood Box Car #153

Another super detailed 2 Cyl. Shay. This one had the lubricator and butane tank removed from the cab to open it up more like the real thing…

I spent almost as much time on the road as I did at the meet, but it was a lot of fun. I’ll probably go back next year. EDIT: To correct credits on #153 and #29 to Pete Thornton. Thanks for the proof read Geoff

Wow, I didn’t know about the meet. Was it Saturday & Sunday or Friday & Saturday?
That’s only 70 miles from me.
I only had Sunday off.
David

Saturday / Sunday / Monday - They will be there tomorrow.

…grinning…

Jon,
Great pictures. Model trains, trolley rides and railfanning all in one day
Ralph

Its was a great day. Nice pictures Jon. Cant wait to see more.

I was so caught up in the superb modeling on display that I didn’t take any overview pictures.

For those who have not been; Scranton is basically a club meet open to the public. There are three tracks; two running exclusively live steam and one running everything (track power, battery & live steam). Only one vendor, Clem’s Warrior Run Locomotive Works - Clem is also the sponsor of one of the tracks. No big crowds or buying frenzies; just a great group of guys running trains and having fun.

Jon,

Thanks for posting. It was great to see you at the meet… also nice to meet Shawn.

The meet was a lot of FUN. It is an open meet, if you live within striking distance you should put it on your calendar for next year… and bring something to run.

Geoff

Oh! You are THE Geoff. A pleasure to meet you. The EBT combine with the modified roof ends was quite impressive, as was the rusted through hopper car. Two of my personal favorites.

Thanks for posting the Scranton meet.
I’ll have to go next year…
