Large Scale Central

Looking for some advice, USA trains NW2 or S4?

I’m looking for some information and suggestions for a kitbash/scratch build project I think I’m going to try. I’m going to try and build a G scale version of the unique Army switcher tested on the D&RGW narrow gauge in the mid 1950s, #4700N. Here’s what she looks like:

This build is not going to be a true scale model. I’m just trying to get something that gives the overall feel of the prototype. The scale will be something close to 1:22.5, but not exact since I’d like to use a 1:29 loco frame for this project. I plan to use either a USA Trains NW2 or S4 frame and build the super structure of the 4700N on top of the frame. Crude yes, but easier and quicker then scratch building the whole thing. And the trucks used on the USA NW2 and S4 are sort of close to the prototype. Also, from what I’ve heard, both are pretty good runners. Since I don’t have either model to look at and compare in person, I was hoping someone here who has either or both might have a good suggestion as to which model would be the best to start with. Remember I’ll just be using the frame. Everything above it will by styrene. I’m thinking maybe the S4, but then again many in HO use an NW2 as the starting point for similar kitbashes. Like this model:

I’d appreciate any input you can provide.

If your going that far why not just buy the power trucks and scratch the rest. On a choice between the two I’d buy the cheepest for a build

Matt,
You have mail!

IF you decide to use the NW-2, I would be interested in purchasing the cab from you or entire body…to convert a calf unit into a cow

The S-4 has trucks side frames that look similar to your prototype.
