Looking for K-27 livery suggestions/pictures

Knowing the Bachmann K-27 is soon to be “extinct” I was happy to find a plow-equipped example at a “reasonable” price. It is unmarked.

I know many of you are ‘more in the know’ when it comes to the ‘K’ and I was hoping someone could help me discover what livery/railroads used the plow version.

Thinking of the ‘flying’ Rio Grande 462/464 or Rio Grande Southern 455…Any others use this version? Google search does not find much.

Thanks in advance.

To the best of my knowledge D&RGW and RGS were the only RRs to use 'em.

My version of it is the pre RGS, pre wreck D&RGW 455, since that’s the era I’m modeling. I have a plow for it, but haven’t attached it yet.

Your absolutely right!!..

In actuality I found two more railroads that use them…Tourist of course.

The Huckleberry Railroad in Michigan has 464 (Even had the tender painted in their “colors” for a brief time)…And of course the Cumbres and Toltec has 463 in “flying” colors.

I may just go D&RGW so they would look good double-heading.

Are you looking for historical accuracy or just cool ideas?

The TRR’s 30s era paint scheme borrows heavily from the Oahu Railway.

There are some outside-frame 2-8-2s that are still running in Guatemala (Baldwin, 1948) which might provide some food for thought, too.

Later,

K

The Rio Grande Southern livery on #461 makes a nice looking K-27:

And I know of at least one photo showing #461 with a plow similar to the Bachmann pilot plow.

Just out of curiosity… did these units have any nicknames?

Why you ask? Well, paint one up like Thomas and use the nickname as its name.

Yes, a rather cute one…“Mud-Hen”.

“Mudhen” sounds very “Thomas-ey”!

What about Madden? The largest Narrow gauge engine on teh Island of Sodor? Murdoch’s NG counterpart? Or maybe the first NG on the island, ala Hiro?

What do you think Kevin… could you work some of your Photoshop magic and whip up a BM K with a blue boiler & red bands?

I actually have the identical green boiler version I lettered in the same scheme but with a different road number (459). I’m thinking of being boring and using the same livery again…Might look neat double-heading.

I just discovered ‘459’ was sold to the National Mexican railroad…Interesting. I wonder if she was ever re-lettered?

I’m rather fond of the West Viriginia & Kentucky’s attire for some reason…
