Looking for G gauge switch lanterns

I would like to find some G Gauge switch lanterns the four sided ones. I can find plenty of the caboose style (three sided) but no four sided one like used in switch stands. I also need the red and green jewels that go in them, I did watch Toy Mans video on making them, plus it has the switch stands that he assembled and then cast his own switch lanterns. I don’t have all the casting stuff that he has, plus the casting were very poorly done. I looked to see if anyone has made any on there 3D printer, but could find any. If you know of a source for these lanterns let me know, thanks.

Hi John,

Depending on how accurate you want and how much you want to spend…my son sells these at Shapeways. I’m sure he’d make them available at a different scale if that’s what you need. He sells lenses too:

Cheers,

Hi John Lenheiser,

I have a handful of switch lights from Aristocraft turnouts. They are four sided with red and green lenses. I don’t use then as I replace the actuators with LGB electric ones. Let me know if you would like some.

Thanks Bob, I’m looking in to the size of these switch lanterns, they do appear to be on the large size, I’m trying to keep my layout to pretty much a correct scale size, I think they will be too big.

I may be picky, but what has “Gauge” got to do with a switch lantern ?

I can very well understand wanting a switch lantern of the appropriate “SCALE” for the equipment I’m modelling…but gauge is not the way to describe one…

The OP specifically said G-gauge and is therefore asking about any switch lantern that would look right when used with track at a 45MM or 1.75" spacing. Not really that difficult to understand.

I can see where this can be a misunderstand when I say G Scale, My railroad is LGB 1:22.5 with both LGB rolling stock and the older style USA Trains rolling stock which matches up with the LGB American rolling stock (the old wood side cars). I have no 1:20.3, or 1:29 stuff as the scale will be out of size for the 1:22.5 LGB. I know many of you mix the different scales and I have no problem with that, it’s your railroad so do what works for you. I’ve looked at all the switch stand lanterns and I believe I will go with the Ozark Miniature’s, they offer the closest style I want and they have the targets that circle the lantern lenses. The Aristo Craft ones would work, but there size is too big for my liking, I don’t measure everything that goes on my railroad with a scale ruler, but I do have a good eye for perspective and how it relates to things in general.

Just wanted to let you know for anyone wanting to purchase the Ozark Miniatures Switch Stand Lanterns #0098 that I received them and they are just the correct size for my G scale. They are done very nice and with just a little clean up of the cast flashing they should go together well. I will be putting them on brass square tubing and putting them on the Bachmann switch stands with LED’s in them, I will probably use the 0404 or the 0603 LED’s. Will post some pics when I get that far along.

Thanks John, I am adding more Bachman switch stands to my layout as time passes, would appreciate the LED mod info

I will update as I go on these switch lanterns, I will most likely not start on them for about two weeks.

John: I just got my order of switch stand lights from Ozark Miniatures on Saturday. I ordered 10 of them for my 6 existing turnouts and 4 for future ones. I saw the Toy Man’s video on him putting them on the LLagas Creek Switch stands and boy did they look great. I make my own switch stands out of brass and have a tutorial on my website that shows how I make them and these Switch stand lights will go great with them. I will be lighting mine up as well. I am going to use the little LED’s that come in a string of about 30 that you get at Xmas for $4.99. I usually by 4 or 5 of the sets each year just to have on hand. I get both the white stands as well and the multi colored ones. Not sure the size of them, but I like that they have the green and white laquared covered wires, as they are stiff and help to slide the LEDs in to hard to get to spots. I just swapped out the bulb that was in the headlight of one of my bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0’s with one of these LED’s and it looks great.

I saw the Toy Man’s video and I think he did cast his own switch lanterns and I personally think they turned out no where close to the quality of Ozark Miniatures lanterns. I guess the size of LED’s are a personal choice and what will fit, I prefer the small 0404 size with the resistor installed in line. I got mine on eBay, 20 for about $10.00 including shipping.
